Key Facts

  • Appearance: 8th
  • Last Appearance: 2017
  • Best Performance: Champions (1995, 1999)

Ghana return to the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026 with renewed belief after a strong showing in the WAFU B qualifiers, where they finished as runners-up.

The Black Starlets fell just short of the title but demonstrated resilience and tactical discipline throughout the tournament, reaffirming their pedigree in African youth football.

How They Qualified

Ghana secured qualification by reaching the final of the WAFU B qualifiers, where they lost narrowly to hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Their journey included an impressive 2-0 semi-final victory over Nigeria, with goals from Michael Awuli and Clément Agyei, showcasing their attacking quality.

Throughout the tournament, Ghana showed consistency and tactical maturity, earning their place among Africa’s elite youth teams.

History in the Competition

Ghana are one of the most successful nations in U-17 AFCON history, having won the title twice in 1995 and 1999.

Although they have not reached those heights in recent years, their strong youth development tradition continues to produce talented players.

Key Players to Watch

  • Joseph Narbi (Midfielder) – A creative force who dictated play and was central to Ghana’s attacking build-up.
  • Micahel  Awuli (Forward) – A powerful attacking midfielder whose presence provides energy and directness in the final third.
  • Clément Agyei (Forward) – A clinical finisher who played a key role in decisive matches, including the semi-final.

Coach & Tactical Approach

Ghana are coached by Dr. Prosper Nartey Ogum, who has instilled tactical flexibility and discipline within the team.

His approach includes:

  • Structured formations, including a well-drilled 4-4-2 system
  • Midfield dominance, focusing on controlling the game’s tempo
  • Targeted tactical adjustments, exploiting opposition weaknesses

Ogum’s ability to adapt tactically was evident in key matches, particularly in neutralising opponents’ strengths.

Tournament Expectations

Ghana will aim to progress beyond the group stage and secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026.

With their pedigree and strong qualifying campaign, the Black Starlets will also target a return to the knockout stages and potentially challenge for honours.

If they can convert their performances into results, Ghana could emerge as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.
