Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has described Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico as a crucial test for the team as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match is scheduled for May 22 and will serve as a key evaluation opportunity for head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical handlers, particularly with several young players and debutants included in the squad.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3Sports, Ofei praised Mexico as a top-level opponent with a strong football culture, great intensity, and vast international experience.
“Mexico is a top-level opponent with a strong football culture, great intensity, and international experience, so this will be an important test for our group,” Ofei said.
The former Black Satellites head coach emphasized that matches of this nature are essential for growth on multiple levels. “These are the types of matches that help players grow, help coaches evaluate, and help a nation continue building for the future,” he explained.
Mexico, who will co-host the World Cup next year, are also expected to use the game as part of their final preparations.
For Ghana, the encounter represents more than just a friendly, with the technical team viewing it as a valuable step in building a competitive and balanced squad for the global tournament.
