Accra, May 6, GNA– The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has called for a thorough and independent investigation into the Karnival Kingdom Festival held from April 22 to 28, 2026.
In a media statement issued to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Reverend Dr. Cyril Fayose, General Secretary, the Council aligned itself with the position of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
The Council said that the reported incidents at the festival was deeply concerning and urged authorities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the event.
The statement condemned acts of public nudity reportedly displayed during the festival, noting that such conduct offended public decency and contravened Ghana’s laws, particularly Section 278 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
“The conduct undermines the moral fabric of our society and erodes the cultural values that define us as a people,” the Council stated.
The CCG further expressed concern over reports that some participants allegedly engaged in such acts under police protection, raising questions about the role of state institutions responsible for maintaining law and order.
It therefore called for a full, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event, including the processes leading to the granting of permits and the deployment of security personnel.
The Council stressed that such imported culture and interactions must be grounded in respect for Ghana’s laws, traditions and societal norms.
It emphasised that imported cultural expressions should not supersede the legal and moral standards that govern public life in the country.
The Council also underscored the need for accountability in governance, urging institutions charged with safeguarding public morality to act consistently and impartially in enforcing the law.
It cautioned against political interference in investigative processes and called on all stakeholders to allow due process to take its course.
The CCG further recommended a thorough and independent investigation with findings made public, a comprehensive review of event permitting processes incorporating clear guidelines on public decency.
The statement noted that the events at the festival represented not only a lapse in judgment but also a serious challenge to the rule of law and societal values, and reaffirmed support for urgent corrective measures to prevent a recurrence.
