A training programme on tourism, hospitality and business, held in Accra last Thursday, has ignited strong calls from industry players for the formation of a Tourism Press Corps to enhance storytelling and promote Ghana’s tourism sector.

The programme, organised by Inter Tourism Expo Accra in collaboration with the Rebecca Ekpe Mentorship Programme for Journalists and Content Creators, received positive feedback from participants, signalling renewed momentum to strengthen tourism journalism in the country.

Tourism press corps

The Chief Executive Officer of Inter Tourism Expo Accra, Emmanuel Treku, expressed satisfaction with the level of engagement and practical insights demonstrated during the training.

He said the programme had achieved its objective of equipping media professionals with the tools to produce compelling and strategic tourism stories.

“The feedback has been extremely encouraging. Participants indicated that the sessions reshaped their understanding of tourism reporting, not merely as coverage, but as a tool for national development,” he stated.

Mr Treku added that the next step was to fast-track the establishment of a tourism press corps — a structured network of trained journalists and content creators dedicated to promoting Ghana’s tourism narrative locally and internationally.

“We are committed to building a strong tourism press corps to champion destination storytelling, drive visibility and support the sector’s growth. This training is only the beginning,” he said.

Story with purpose

The Founder of the Rebecca Ekpe Mentorship Programme and Vice-President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Rebecca Ekpe, reinforced the call for purposeful storytelling.

Speaking on the theme, “Building Ghana’s Tourism Voice: A Call to Tell Our Story with Purpose”, she urged journalists to go beyond routine reporting and adopt approaches that inspire travel, attract investment and shape the country’s global image.

Participants described the training as timely and impactful and called for further training in areas such as destination marketing, tourism investment reporting and digital storytelling.
