Starting primary school at age 17 would have ended the ambitions of many, but for Professor Adams Sulemana Achanso, it marked the beginning of a journey that has now culminated in his rise to an Associate Professor of Social Policy at the University for Development Studies (UDS).

That personal trajectory from a late starter in primary one to becoming an associate professor at age 53 formed the central message at the launch of his book, “Reflections on a Personal Journey – An Inspiration for School Dropouts,” in Tamale.

The 93-page book, which captures his life experiences, is intended to inspire both young people and adults who may feel constrained by missed opportunities or challenging circumstances.

With a reflective tone, Prof. Achanso urged young people not to allow difficult beginnings to define their future, stressing that setbacks could be transformed into opportunities.

He recounted how starting school at 17, an age when many peers were far ahead academically, did not deter him from pursuing education with determination and focus.

“Adversity should not take the better part of you.

There is always a silver lining that presents an opportunity to turn your story around,” he said.

Prof. Achanso emphasised that self-discovery, discipline and consistency were critical in navigating life’s uncertainties and achieving long-term goals.

Prof. Achanso further urged the youth to engage in self-discovery, describing it as essential for setting meaningful goals and achieving success.

He added that the publication sought to promote optimism and encourages readers to develop a positive outlook even in difficult circumstances.

Source of hope

The Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB),Dr Doli-wura Zakaria who chaired the event, described the book as a significant contribution to personal development and a source of hope for many.

He said success must be driven by conviction and purpose rather than convenience and commended the author for documenting his journey to inspire others.

Dr Zakaria said the book highlighted the adversities faced by the author and demonstrated how perseverance could lead to fulfilment.

The launch brought together academics, students, traditional leaders and researchers.
