President John Dramani Mahama has inspected ongoing construction works on the Akosombo–Gyakiti road in the Eastern Region, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to delivering long-overdue development to communities affected by the creation of the Akosombo Dam.
Speaking during the inspection, President Mahama reflected on the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, noting that the construction of the Akosombo Dam was rooted in a vision to extend development, including electricity, to all parts of the country.
He, however, acknowledged that communities displaced by the dam’s construction did not immediately benefit from electricity and other basic infrastructure, stressing that it is only fair they continue to receive priority in national development efforts.
The President expressed concern over previous road contracts in the area, revealing that about four kilometres of work had earlier been awarded but failed to yield the expected results. He was, however, optimistic about the current contractor, citing visible progress, capacity, and commitment to delivering quality work.
President Mahama also underscored the need for holistic development, noting that beyond roads, investments in education, healthcare, and other critical infrastructure remain essential to improving livelihoods in Akwamu and surrounding communities.
He indicated that the area’s Member of Parliament, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, who also serves as Deputy Minister for Finance, will work with government to ensure key development challenges are addressed by the end of 2028.
The President further acknowledged the support and appreciation shown by schoolchildren who displayed placards during the visit, describing their gesture as encouraging. He added that several schools in Akwamu have already benefited from interventions by the Ghana Education Trust Fund as part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure.
Commending the contractor for a strong track record, President Mahama expressed confidence that the project would be completed to a high standard. He assured residents of government’s continued commitment to the area’s development.
President Mahama announced that he expects to return within a year to commission the Akosombo–Gyakiti road alongside other ongoing projects in the area’s secondary schools.
