The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on stakeholders to sustain the progress made in promoting press freedom and protecting journalists across the country.

In a statement to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, the Association commended Ghana’s improved ranking on the Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, where the country moved from 52nd to 39th position.

Ghana also ranked fourth in Africa on the index, an achievement the GJA attributed to consistent advocacy, constructive engagement and the commitment of stakeholders to advancing media freedom.

“Your collective efforts, often undertaken under challenging conditions, remain vital in promoting truth, accountability and national cohesion,” the statement said.

“The GJA salutes you and says ayekoo to your resilience and unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalism in service of the public good,” it added.

The statement, signed by the General Secretary of the GJA, Dominic Hlordzi, called for renewed efforts to address ongoing challenges such as journalist safety, media sustainability and regulatory reforms.

“The Association urges the Government of Ghana and the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to ensure that all cases of attacks against journalists are promptly, thoroughly and transparently investigated, with perpetrators held accountable to end the culture of impunity,” it said.

It also stressed the need to review and repeal provisions in laws such as the Electronic Communications Act, 2008, which it said are often used to intimidate and silence journalists.

The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and promoting a safer and more professional media environment.

“We will continue to speak truth to power, challenge injustices and hold duty bearers accountable without fear or favour,” GJA President Albert Dwumfour was quoted as saying.

This year’s World Press Freedom Day, marked on May 3, is themed “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlighting the role of freedom of expression in building resilient, inclusive and peaceful societies.

The Association is expected to organise a national event later this month to mark the occasion and honour journalists and institutions that have contributed to media development and democratic accountability in Ghana.
