The government of Ghana has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana, Thando Dalamba, over concerns about the treatment of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in that country.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, the envoy was invited on April 23, 2026, by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to formally convey Ghana’s concerns over alleged acts of intimidation and harassment captured in widely circulated videos.
Diplomatic engagement intensifies
The summons follows earlier discussions between Mr Ablakwa and South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, regarding the same incidents.
Mr Ablakwa said he had engaged his counterpart over the disturbing footage involving Ghanaians, noting that Mr Lamola had expressed concern and confirmed that investigations were underway.
Concerns over treatment of foreign nationals
The Ministry indicated that the latest move forms part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address rising tensions in parts of South Africa, where some incidents have targeted foreign nationals.
Mr Ablakwa cited a case in KwaZulu-Natal Province involving a Ghanaian national believed to be legally resident, who was confronted and asked to produce proof of his immigration status. The individual was reportedly ordered to leave the country and “fix his country”, a development the Minister described as undermining the dignity and rights of law-abiding persons.
The statement added that follow-up reports point to escalating tensions, with some foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, being advised to remain indoors for their safety.
Government calls for protection of citizens
Although no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the current situation, Mr Ablakwa warned that similar incidents in the past had resulted in loss of life and destruction of property.
He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Ghana and South Africa, recalling Ghana’s support during the anti-apartheid struggle and the role of Kwame Nkrumah in Africa’s liberation efforts.
The Minister stressed that attacks on law-abiding individuals run contrary to the principles of African unity and peaceful coexistence.
South Africa responds to concerns
The Government of Ghana has lodged a formal protest and called for immediate measures to guarantee the safety of its nationals in South Africa, as well as assurances that such incidents will not recur.
In response, Mr Dalamba acknowledged the concerns raised and indicated that the South African authorities were taking steps to address the situation.
He said law enforcement agencies were closely monitoring developments to prevent violence and ensure accountability for any wrongdoing.
The Ministry said it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders to safeguard the welfare and protection of Ghanaians living abroad.
