The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding the immediate release of its Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, alleging that he has been arrested by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, claimed that EOCO officers, with the assistance of officials from the Ghana Immigration Service, arrested Mr Aboagye at the airport.
According to the NPP, Mr Aboagye has since been held in custody, with his lawyers allegedly denied access to him and his whereabouts undisclosed.
“Since then they have denied his lawyers access and his whereabouts is not disclosed with no charges preferred,” the statement said.
The party described the alleged arrest as politically motivated and accused the government of using state institutions to intimidate its political opponents.
“Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation,” Mr Kodua stated.
He argued that Mr Aboagye had been a vocal critic of the government, particularly on issues relating to illegal mining (galamsey), and had only recently announced his intention to contest for a leadership position within the NPP.
The party is demanding that EOCO either release Mr Aboagye immediately or arraign him before a court in accordance with the law.
“EOCO [should] release Dennis Miracles Aboagye immediately, or charge him and put him before a court of competent jurisdiction as the Constitution requires,” the statement said.
The NPP also called for Mr Aboagye to be granted unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, arguing that his constitutional rights must be respected.
“Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution is not a suggestion,” the party stated.
Mr Kodua further urged the government to end what he described as “the pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions targeted at members of the New Patriotic Party.”
He added: “Institutions of state are not private weapons. Ghanaians are watching, and Ghana’s institutions will outlive this government.”
The party also appealed to its supporters to remain calm and act within the law.
“To our members: stay calm, stay lawful, stay united. Intimidation has never silenced this party, and it will not begin today,” the statement concluded.
However, as of the time of publication, EOCO had not issued an official statement confirming or responding to the NPP’s claims.
