Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has engaged his South African counterpart following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians in South Africa.

In a statement shared on social media, the Minister revealed that he held a telephone conversation with Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, over viral videos showing what he described as “extremely disturbing” incidents.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the South African government has expressed empathy with the victims and pledged to conduct full-scale investigations into the incidents.

He added that authorities in South Africa are expected to hold a briefing with African ambassadors as part of efforts to address the situation.

The Minister also disclosed that he has been in constant contact with Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, to coordinate Ghana’s response.

He confirmed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission has identified the main victim captured in one of the viral videos and is providing consular assistance.

“I am gladdened that so far colleagues in our diplomatic mission have located the main victim… He is doing very well,” Mr Ablakwa stated, adding that no Ghanaian life has been lost.

He urged calm among Ghanaians while assuring citizens that the government remains committed to their safety both at home and abroad.

“The Mahama administration remains uncompromising about the welfare and safety of Ghanaians… we are determined to guarantee the protection of all citizens,” he said.

Mr Ablakwa further called for unity across the continent, stressing that isolated incidents should not undermine African solidarity.

“The overwhelming majority of Africans are united and share an unbreakable bond — we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements,” he added.
