The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has arrested a 32-year-old Nigerian, Yusif Dahiru, for allegedly engaging in unauthorised waste collection and extorting money from members of the public at an illegal dumping site near UTC in Accra.
The Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 15, said the suspect was arrested at about 3:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13, following a tip-off.
Mr Ankrah explained that Dahiru had positioned himself at the site and was receiving refuse from members of the public as though he had been officially assigned to manage waste disposal at the location.
He noted, however, that the suspect had no authorisation from the Assembly to operate at the site.
According to him, Dahiru was also allegedly collecting money from people under the pretext of offering waste disposal services and claimed to be working for a supervisor.
During interrogation, the suspect denied being an official waste collector but admitted that he had been assisting in dragging refuse to the site in exchange for money.
The Assembly says it is continuing investigations into the matter.
