The battle for control of Mt Kenya’s massive voting bloc is intensifying, with President William Ruto and his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua locked in a high-stakes political duel ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The chessboard focus is the projected 7.4 million voters in the Mt Kenya region, a figure that could account for more than a quarter of the national vote, according to data from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The commission’s ongoing voter registration drive, IEBC, has registered an additional 344,316, pushing the total number of new voters enlisted since September 29, 2025, to over 600,000. signalling the region’s growing electoral dominance.

Mt Kenya has long been Kenya’s most influential political kingmaker, having produced three presidents, Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta, and playing a decisive role in the 2022 election that propelled Ruto to power.

In that race, Ruto garnered approximately 2.9 million votes from the region, forming about 41 per cent of his national tally of 7.1 million votes.

However, the once-solid alliance between Ruto and Gachagua has fractured dramatically following Gachagua’s ouster from the Kenya Kwanza government, leaving the vote-rich region politically volatile and increasingly unpredictable.

Speaking in Kirinyaga County on March 28, 2026, Gachagua continued with his barenuckles, warning that Ruto’s support in Mt Kenya has significantly eroded, saying that it will be difficult for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) honcho to garner 5 per cent of the votes come 2027.

Nataka nikwaambie William Ruto, ukipata five per cent ya kura hapa mlimani,” Gachagua declared.

He portrayed himself as the authentic voice of the mountain, invoking his roots and aligning himself with the region’s historical Mau Mau legacy.

Gachagua further accused Ruto of sidelining local leaders and mismanaging key economic sectors, particularly coffee farming, a critical livelihood in Central Kenya, claiming that the president had been spreading misinformation about reforms in the sector while shifting blame for failures onto him.

The sharp rhetoric shows a broader realignment in Mt Kenya politics. Gachagua has recently appeared to close ranks with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, signalling the emergence of a formidable bloc that could challenge Ruto’s influence in the region.

Uhuru, while maintaining he has no intention of running for office, has issued veiled warnings to voters, urging them to make careful political choices. His renewed engagement, alongside Gachagua’s grassroots mobilisation, has added pressure on Ruto’s re-election strategy.

In response, Ruto has ramped up his charm offensive across the region, frequently reminding residents of their role in his 2022 victory.

“Nyinyi ndiyo mlifanya president,” he has repeatedly told crowds, while dismissing critics whom he accuses of attempting to divide him from Mt Kenya voters.

Ruto’s deputy, Kithure Kindiki, has also taken an aggressive stance, warning opponents against what he termed political intimidation and pledging to defend the administration’s track record.

Meanwhile, IEBC projections show Kiambu, Nakuru, and Murang’a counties leading in new voter registrations, with the region expected to contribute about 1.7 million new voters out of a national target of 6.3 million by 2027.

If achieved, Kenya’s total voter roll could hit 28 million, further elevating Mt Kenya’s kingmaker status.

The region’s growing voter base has heightened its strategic importance, making it the epicentre of early 2027 campaign battles.

With alliances shifting and rhetoric escalating, the Ruto-Gachagua rivalry is shaping up to be a defining contest that could determine not only the fate of Mt Kenya but also the country’s next presidency.
