Dr Asah-Asante exposes persistent ‘double standards’ in Ghana’s politics

Political scientist and Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has questioned the consistency of Ghana’s political parties, noting how their positions often shift once they move from opposition into government.

Recalling when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in opposition, he mentioned persons like Sam George and others who championed certain causes with great energy, questioning why they have suddenly gone silent.

He expressed dismay over their current stance on certain topical issues like LGBTQ+.

“I find it very interesting. Interesting in the sense that if we look at the energy that the minority then [NDC] used when they were in opposition, the energy they used to champion their cause, Sam George and his friends. So, this U-turn has left everybody wondering, ‘Is it the same party who rooted so much for the bill, and what has changed?’ But obviously, from where I sit, I can understand,” he said in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Dr Asah-Asante further explained that the shifting of positions by political parties is a recurring feature of Ghana’s democracy, where promises made in opposition often fade once leaders assume power.

He noted that this pattern should serve as a lesson to the citizenry to pay closer attention to the words and actions of politicians, both before and after they take office.

“Politics has that type of feature, where people can say one thing in opposition, and as soon as they get into power, it’s a different story… and all of that. But that should be a learning curve for everybody. And then you know that there are things that, when leaders say, you want to listen with rapt attention, and then see what the way forward is…

“So, for me, it’s not surprising. I know that some of these things, people can say, but as soon as they come to power, they won’t talk about it anymore. Recall, NDC promised us a better Ghana agenda. We saw what happened. The NPP also promised us a whole lot — one district, one village, one dam, and all that. And it adds to what we know in politics. So, for me, it’s business as usual,” he added.
