Ghana has outscored Nigeria and Kenya on Fitch Solutions’ 2026 Digital Readiness Risk Index (DRRI), recording 75.5 points out of 100 in an assessment that positions the country as one of sub-Saharan Africa’s more competitive digital economies while identifying persistent structural risks that could slow progress.

The score places Ghana ahead of Nigeria, which recorded 74.4 points, and Kenya at 72.4, though Fitch Solutions cautioned that all three markets face considerable supporting infrastructure, labour supply, and business environment risks, including limited pools of skilled workers and weak transportation and power grids.

For Ghana specifically, unfavourable exchange rate conditions and inadequate infrastructure remain the most cited constraints on digital investment attractiveness, echoing concerns that have featured in international assessments of the country’s economic environment over recent years.

Despite those structural headwinds, Fitch Solutions identified the agribusiness sector as Ghana’s strongest near-term digital opportunity. The report noted that Ghana’s relatively small and concentrated agricultural market makes it well-positioned for focused investment in agricultural technology (AgTech), where returns from targeted spending could materialise faster than in larger, less concentrated markets.

Fitch pointed to Ghana’s Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation’s launch of the Timbuktoo AgriTech Hub in Accra as a signal of the country’s intent to attract local entrepreneurs to design and commercialise solutions that help improve agricultural productivity, market access, and climate resilience. The hub is part of a continental initiative spanning eight African countries.

AgTech investment in Ghana is projected to grow from US$80 million in 2024 to US$151 million by 2034, driven by automation tools including drones, precision farming equipment, connected machinery, and expanding demand for digital farm management platforms.

The Fitch DRRI, which assesses economies across multiple dimensions including digital infrastructure, regulatory environment, human capital, and innovation capacity, is used by institutional investors and technology companies to benchmark digital investment risk across emerging markets.
