The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has issued an official statement welcoming the Confederation of African Football’s decision to uphold their appeal and declare Morocco winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
They insist the move reinforces respect for competition rules.
“Following its communication regarding the decision of the Appeals Committee اÙتابعة ÙÙاتØاد اÙØ¥ÙرÙÙÙ ÙÙرة اÙÙد٠(CAF), the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces that it welcomes and appreciates this decision, as it reinforces respect for regulations and ensures the necessary stability for the proper conduct of international competitions,” the statement read.
Senegal, who staged a brief walk-off in a bid to protest what they described as unfair officiating, were declared initial winners of the AFCON 2025 tournament thanks to an extra-time strike by Pape Gueye. This crucial goal followed a penalty miss by Morocco, which sent shockwaves around the world.
However, about a couple of months after, the final results have been overturned, citing Senegal’s walk-off as a forfeiture.
Morocco, who welcomed this with joy, further outlines their discipline to follow due procedure even when the odds appeared to be against them.
“The Federation has always been committed to adhering to the laws governing the resolution of disputes related to competitions within the established legal framework. It has presented its observations and participated in all the sessions it was invited to, consistently seeking to ensure that its rights and the rules that guarantee the smooth and fair running of competitions are respected.”
Finally, the Federation expressed appreciation for all national teams that participated in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, describing it as a significant milestone in the development of African football.
