GTA hails Citi FM, Channel One TV for for boosting domestic tourism through Heritage Caravan

Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has commended Citi FM and Channel One TV for promoting Ghanaian culture and domestic tourism through the Heritage Caravan initiative, describing the programme as a strong platform for strengthening national identity and unity.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, March 13, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, praised the initiative, noting that it encourages Ghanaians to explore tourist destinations across the country while deepening appreciation for the nation’s culture and heritage.

According to him, tourism remains one of Ghana’s key economic drivers, consistently ranking among the top contributors to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He, however, stressed that the sector cannot be developed by the government alone, highlighting the critical role of the private sector in promoting tourism.

“Tourism has always been either number three GDP or number four GDP. If we don’t intentionally promote our domestic tourism and rely too much on foreign inbound visitors, uncertainties like a global pandemic or other international developments can affect the sector.

“The lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic should teach us that we must intensify domestic tourism. That is why I commend Channel One and Citi for the Heritage Caravan,” he said.

He also praised Citi FM and Channel One TV for setting the pace in promoting tourism through the initiative, noting that the programme’s success has encouraged other media organisations to roll out similar tourism-focused campaigns.

“And now you see that all the media houses have jumped on. If not for such programmes and promotions, people wouldn’t even travel. Government cannot do it alone,” he added.

The Heritage Caravan is an annual tourism initiative designed to encourage Ghanaians to explore their country by visiting historical sites, cultural landmarks, and local communities while enjoying authentic cuisine and entertainment.

The 2026 edition attracted hundreds of patrons and blended cultural discovery with culinary experiences and music as participants journeyed through regions including Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, Oti, Ashanti, Central and Western.

Corporate partners such as GOIL, Multi Pro Company, OmniBisc, Didi Shito, Gino Tomato Paste, Nana Rice, Hollard Insurance, Caveman and Peeva Beverages.
