The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has received a senior delegation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at the Police Headquarters in Accra as part of efforts to strengthen operational cooperation between the two police institutions.

The visiting team held high-level engagements with the Ghana Police Service, including discussions with the Police Management Board (POMAB), focusing on modern policing strategies, technology-driven law enforcement, and collaboration in tackling transnational crime.

Key among the discussions was the growing use of technology in policing. Both sides exchanged views on data-driven policing models, digital investigative tools, and intelligence platforms that support operational decision-making.

Officer safety and welfare also featured prominently, with emphasis placed on training, equipment, and institutional systems aimed at protecting officers while enhancing operational effectiveness.

The two sides further discussed police accountability within democratic systems. The NYPD delegation shared its experiences on transparency and internal oversight, while the Ghana Police Service outlined reforms and accountability mechanisms within Ghana’s policing framework.

A proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NYPD and the Ghana Police Service was also reviewed. The framework is expected to support sustained cooperation through information sharing, specialised training, and joint efforts in combating transnational criminal activities

During the visit, the delegation held working meetings with several operational units of the Ghana Police Service, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate. The engagements focused on investigative collaboration, intelligence coordination, and emerging transnational crime threats.

The delegation also toured the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at the Police Headquarters, where they were briefed on Ghana’s command and control system used to coordinate nationwide policing operations and incident response.

One of the key outcomes of the visit was a proposal for officer exchange programmes between the two institutions. Under the arrangement being considered, a senior NYPD detective could be stationed at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, while a senior Ghanaian police officer may be embedded within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau in New York.

Beyond the police engagements, the delegation also held courtesy meetings with the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo.

.

Discussions centred on national security coordination, intelligence sharing, and wider cooperation between Ghanaian and United States law enforcement agencies.

The team also paid a courtesy call on the Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen institutional collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and the NYPD in addressing modern security challenges and strengthening international policing partnerships.
