The Senate is set to engage officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a high-level meeting on Nigeria’s economic outlook and ongoing reform programmes initiated by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The meeting forms part of the IMF’s ongoing Article IV Consultation with Nigeria and is expected to provide a platform for discussions on the country’s economic management as well as possible support for the Federal Government’s reform agenda.
According to a notice issued to senators by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, the IMF mission to Nigeria scheduled the consultation exercise to run from March 4 to March 17, 2026.
Odo, in the letter read on the floor by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, explained that during the period, the IMF mission team would hold consultations with key government institutions and had specifically requested a high-level interaction with the leadership of the Senate.
The notice reads in part, “Article IV Consultation exercise. The Federal Office of Finance wishes to inform the leadership of the Senate and distinguished senators that at the instance of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the International Monetary Fund Article IV Consultation in Nigeria has been scheduled to hold from March 4 to March 17, 2026.
“The IMF mission team will engage select government institutions in meetings. Accordingly, it has requested a high-level meeting between the President of the Senate and the IMF mission team during which it intends to engage the Senate on matters of economic management.”
It added that discussions would focus on the country’s economic outlook and ways the IMF could support the Federal Government’s ongoing economic reforms.
The notice further stated, “The meeting is expected to provide insights on Nigeria’s economic outlook and how the IMF can establish support for the ongoing reforms of the Federal Government.”
To ensure robust legislative participation, chairmen of key Senate committees have been requested to attend the session.
They include the committees on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions; Appropriations; Capital Markets; Finance; Petroleum Resources (Upstream); National Planning and Economic Affairs; and Public Accounts.
According to the notice, the meeting will be held on Monday, May 16, 2026, at Conference Room 301, New Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Clerk urged the invited lawmakers to attend the session, assuring them of the highest regard of the Senate leadership.
