The police have arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery incident that occurred at the Airport Residential Area in Accra on February 23.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Ashiabi, 24, an Okada rider, admitted upon arrest that he committed the robbery.

The Police retrieved two mobile phones belonging to the victim.

A statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs of the Accra Region, said on February 25, Anneli Niimpungu Amanyanga, accompanied by Justina Anamba, reported that she had been attacked and robbed by a young man on a motorbike while walking to the Namibia High Commission at the Airport Residential Area.

According to the complainant, the suspect made away with her handbag containing an iPhone 15 Pro Max, valued at GH¢19,000, a Huawei P50 Pro mobile phone valued at GH¢11,000, and a Namibian diplomatic passport.

The other items were a Namibian driver’s licence, a bunch of office and house keys, an FBN Gold ATM card, a Republic Bank ATM card and personal effects.

Upon receipt of the complaint, a team from the Regional Criminal Investigations Department, supported by the Charlie SWAT Unit, tracked the stolen iPhone to Galaway near the Agbogbloshie Total Filling Station, where Miracle Asare, 26, a spare parts dealer at Agbogbloshie, was arrested and the phone retrieved from him.

Further investigations led to the arrest of Theophilus Darko, 40, and Benjamin Opoku, 26, both phone dealers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, who were identified as part of the chain through which the stolen phone had passed.

Police also tracked the Huawei P50 Pro mobile phone to Dansoman, where Emmanuel Abangbase, 41, was arrested and the phone retrieved.

He later identified Daniel Ashiabi as the person who sold the phone to him.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted committing the robbery and stealing the complainant’s handbag containing the phones and other items.

He further admitted selling the iPhone 15 Pro Max at Kwame Nkrumah Circle near KFC for GH¢2,500 and the Huawei phone to Emmanuel Abangbase for GH¢1,000.

The suspect also told Police that he burnt the complainant’s diplomatic passport and other documents.

Investigations further revealed that the suspect had been involved in similar robbery activities within parts of Accra, including Achimota, Kaneshie and the Airport Residential Area.

Daniel Ashiabi is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations, while Theophilus Darko, Benjamin Opoku and Emmanuel Abangbase have been granted Police enquiry bail.

The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.

It also warned individuals who dealt in stolen goods that they would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Command assured the public of its continued commitment to combating robbery and other criminal activities within the region.
