Preserving Ghana’s Legacy: Kärcher, Jamal Hassan restore Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Kärcher, the global leader in cleaning technology, in partnership with its long-standing Ghanaian dealer, Jamal Hassan Co. Ltd., has completed the restorative cleaning of the iconic Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

Carried out in late 2025, the project focused on revitalising the Mausoleum and surrounding monuments dedicated to Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah.

Over time, environmental pollution, harsh weather conditions, and biological growth, such as algae and moss, had dulled the natural brilliance of Italian marble and local stone.

The initiative forms part of Kärcher’s global cultural sponsorship programme, which has supported the cleaning and preservation of more than 160 historic monuments worldwide — including Mount Rushmore and Christ the Redeemer.

Restoring a monument of such national and Pan-African significance required technical care and precision.

Specialists from Kärcher Germany worked closely with the technical team at Jamal Hassan Co. Ltd. to conduct detailed material and environmental assessments before work commenced.

Instead of using harsh chemicals or abrasive pressure that could compromise the structure, the team deployed advanced hot-water high-pressure systems and specialised steam technology.

During the steam phase, temperatures reached up to 155°C, effectively removing deeply embedded dirt and eliminating biological spores while safeguarding the integrity of the stone.

The objective, project leaders emphasised, was not merely to clean the structure but to preserve it for future generations.

The project’s success was underpinned by strong on-the-ground collaboration. As Kärcher’s authorised representative in Ghana, Jamal Hassan Co. Ltd. provided logistical coordination, skilled technical support and local oversight to ensure the work was executed professionally and respectfully.

Ali El Hassan, Managing Director of Jamal Hassan Co. Ltd., described the assignment as a responsibility beyond a routine technical engagement.

“The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park holds deep historical significance for Ghana and for Pan-Africanism. For us, this project was more than a technical assignment — it was a responsibility. Facilitating this partnership and bringing Kärcher’s restorative expertise to protect such an important national landmark is something we are truly proud of,” he said.

Bode Dembele, Senior Sales Manager for West Africa, also underscored the broader mission behind the initiative.

“Our mission extends beyond cleaning — it is about preserving value. We are grateful for the trust placed in us by the Ghanaian authorities and for the strong collaboration with Jamal Hassan Co. Ltd.

Contributing to the restoration of the resting place of one of Africa’s most influential leaders was a privilege for our entire team,” he noted.

The revitalisation enhances the visitor experience while supporting the long-term preservation of one of Ghana’s most important national monuments.

With the restoration complete, the Memorial Park continues to stand as a dignified and welcoming site for citizens, students and international visitors — preserving both the physical structure and the enduring legacy it represents.
