While most doctors declined or sought reposting, Dr Ama Antwiwaa Adu-Appiah accepted to serve at the Paga District Hospital to bring critical care to communities in need.
Out of the 27 doctors posted to the Upper East Region in 2026, she is the only one who chose service over comfort.
Akandoh storms Northern Region to ascertain whether doctors posted have reported
In an interview with CDR Africa and monitored by GhanaWeb on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Dr Adu-Appiah, who has a keen interest in anaesthesia, said her mentor, alongside the regional director and the medical superintendent at the Paga District Hospital, reassured her about the posting and prospects for further specialisation.
“What encouraged me to report to the Upper East region was the reception. When I came to have a look at the region, I was received very well. Secondly, the honourable Regional Director promised me to help me further my education, which is to specialise in the nearest possible time. And that encouraged me because I have a particular interest in anaesthesia.

“And then my medical superintendent, when I met him, was very encouraging. And he, also being from the South, encouraged me as well. And then my mentor, when I called him concerning the postings, asked me not to worry,” she noted.
She continued, “Since I arrived, everything has been fine. My accommodation and work environment have been well arranged, and nothing has surprised me.”
Meanwhile, the health minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has confirmed that more doctors are now accepting postings in previously neglected regions.
According to him, 10 doctors had reported to the Oti Region, 14 to the Upper East, 7 to the Upper West, and 15 to the Western North Region, showing significant improvements compared with figures from 2024 and 2025.
To enforce accountability, the Ministry of Health will remove from the national payroll any doctor who fails to report to their assigned deprived area by the end of February 2026.
“If you have not reported, your name will be taken off the payroll, and the slots will be opened to those willing to go,” the minister stated.
The initiative aims to tackle persistent shortages and uneven distribution of medical professionals, particularly in rural districts.
