Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was visibly shaken on Friday, February 27, 2026, as Speaker Alban Bagbin nearly fell outside Parliament of Ghana shortly after the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Her expression captured the shock of the moment, while members of the security detail quickly intervened to prevent the Speaker from falling.

President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama were nearby as the Speaker was helped to safety, ensuring the tense situation was quickly resolved.

Earlier, President Mahama delivered his 2026 State of the Nation Address, outlining his government’s priorities for the year ahead.

He acknowledged that his administration inherited a distressed economy but noted that progress has 2026 made in stabilising the country and putting it on a path to recovery.

“I was clear from the outset that recovery would not come easily, but I was also clear that I would stop at nothing to turn this situation around and bring relief to Ghanaians,” he stated.

President Mahama emphasised that his administration remains committed to restoring growth.

“From the outset, we resolved to choose discipline over waste, reform over excuses, and stability over speculation. Our first order of business was to halt the economic haemorrhage and restore order to public finances. We tightened expenditure and commitment controls, improved payables reporting, and conducted a comprehensive audit of 2024 commitments to restore credibility and discipline,” he added.

The address also touched on key national concerns, including the no-bed syndrome in hospitals, illegal mining (galamsey), education, and other critical sectors.
