Accra, Feb. 27, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted strengthened border protection, enhanced intelligence coordination and structural reforms within Ghana’s security services as key pillars of his administration’s national security strategy.
Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, on Friday, the President outlined measures aimed at protecting Ghana from external threats and internal criminal activities.
He noted that the deteriorating security situation in parts of the West African sub-region required heightened vigilance and proactive preparedness.
President Mahama said government had intensified surveillance and patrols along vulnerable border areas to prevent any spill-over of extremist activities.
He added that collaboration between the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies had been strengthened under a coordinated national security framework.
Intelligence gathering and information-sharing systems had been improved to enhance early warning and support pre-emptive responses to potential threats.
President Mahama further announced reforms to modernise the operational capacity of the security services through improved communication infrastructure and the deployment of digital technologies.
On community safety, President Mahama said law enforcement agencies were deepening engagement with local communities to build trust and improve grassroots intelligence.
He stressed that maintaining law and order required not only effective enforcement but also public cooperation.
The President reaffirmed government’s commitment to upholding constitutional order, democratic governance and the rule of law through a professional, non-partisan and accountable security sector.
He noted that investments in the security services would focus not only on equipment and logistics, but also on personnel welfare, training, discipline and ethical standards.
President Mahama assured Ghanaians of government’s continued commitment to taking decisive steps to preserve peace and stability, describing the country as a “beacon of democracy” in the sub-region whose security must not be compromised.
He called for bipartisan support in Parliament to sustain funding and strengthen oversight of the security services to ensure long-term institutional resilience.
The President emphasised the importance of national unity and vigilance to addressing emerging threats and safeguarding Ghana’s future.
