Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa arrived in Kyiv on his country’s first-ever official visit to Ukraine, where he was met by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who called Feb. 25 a “historic day” in a post on X.

The two ministers visited the Wall of Remembrance for fallen Ukrainian defenders near St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery and laid flowers there.

Sybiha thanked Ablakwa for his personal statement of support on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion and commended Ghana for voting in favor of the U.N. General Assembly resolution “The Path to Peace” adopted on Feb. 24.

That nonbinding resolution called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity; it passed with 107 votes in favor, including Ghana’s, while Russia, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Iran, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger and Sudan voted against, and the United States was among those that abstained.

The ministers also discussed Ghanaian citizens fighting on Russia’s side who have been captured by Ukrainian forces.

“Ukraine strictly upholds the Geneva Conventions and will grant Ghanaian diplomats access to their nationals,” said Sybiha.
