Government of Ghana has approved the payment of long-outstanding gratuity arrears for retired military personnel under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the payments follow consultations between the Military High Command and the Ministries of Finance and Defence to resolve the five-year-old impasse over the gratuity formula.

In a statement issued by the Acting Director General of Public Relations, Veronica Adzo Arhin, the phased plan, which will be implemented over two years, will see a total of 2,393 retired officers and soldiers, including 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers, receive arrears based on the revised CI 129 formula.

“… All personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears based on the new gratuity formula.

“The first tranche will be released by close of business on Friday, 27 February 2026. A total of 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers will benefit. Consequently, all future retirements will be processed fully in line with CI 129,” the statement said.

Under the arrangement, the qualified personnel are military personnel who retired from November 2020 onwards.

GAF said payments will be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027, with the first tranche scheduled for release by close of business day on Friday, February 27, 2026.

“Payments will be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027,” the statement indicated.
