Why Black Stars matches could last over two hours at the World Cup

The Black Stars are expected to contend with challenging weather conditions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada in June 2026.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L and will battle 1966 winners England, 2018 runner-up Croatia, and the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League champions, Panama.

According to the FIFA schedule, the Black Stars will play their first group game on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at the 45,000-seat Toronto Stadium. Their second game will be against England on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Gillette Stadium in Boston.

Ghana’s final group stage match against Croatia will be played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Climate Issues in the U.S.

To address the heat challenge in the U.S., FIFA has introduced mandatory three-minute hydration breaks in each half of the games. These breaks will occur around the 22nd minute of each half. This measure will split the standard 90-minute game (plus stoppage time) into four sections, similar to the structure of American football.

Considering these breaks, stoppage time, and regular play, matches played in the U.S. are likely to exceed two hours.

Additionally, when storms occur during matches, games are paused for several minutes until authorities give the all-clear signal to resume.

This was evident at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where Chelsea’s game against Benfica was delayed by two hours due to extreme weather conditions.

FIFA is considering moving matches to evenings or early mornings to avoid similar disruptions, which often frustrate fans and officials.

With Ghana scheduled to play two matches in the U.S., their games could last over two hours when factoring in hydration breaks, stoppage time, and potential adverse weather conditions.
