The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has held a crisis meeting to address incidents of violence and assault recorded during ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region.
The meeting, held on Monday, February 23, 2026, brought together the GES Management Team and a Central Regional delegation to review the reported incidents and agree on measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Central Regional delegation was led by the Regional Director of Education, Dr Juliette Dufie Otami, and included municipal and district directors of education, heads of affected senior high and technical schools, the Regional Physical Education and Sports Coordinator, the Regional Public Relations Officer, zonal sports executives and coordinators, as well as some affected students and their parents. The Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, Prof George K.T. Oduro, was also present.
The Regional Director and her team provided detailed eyewitness accounts of the incidents, outlining what transpired, the causes, immediate steps taken and proposed strategies to strengthen safety and security during future inter-school sporting events.
Professor Davis condemned the acts of violence and expressed dissatisfaction over the level of aggression displayed by some students, noting that such conduct undermines discipline, sportsmanship and mutual respect, which are core values of school competitions. He reiterated the importance of school games as platforms for talent discovery and unity among schools, adding that students with sporting potential must be guided to pursue opportunities responsibly.
The Director-General endorsed the Central Regional Director’s decision to suspend all sporting activities pending thorough investigations into the reported incidents.
Management also clarified that no death was recorded, contrary to reports circulated in sections of the media. The student who had been erroneously reported dead was present at the meeting, while other affected students who had been hospitalised have since been discharged and are receiving medical attention.
It was further confirmed that the alleged perpetrators have been arrested and are assisting the police with investigations.
GES indicated that any student found culpable after investigations would face appropriate sanctions in line with the laws of Ghana and the Service’s regulations.
