The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has directed the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, to revoke the appointments of 17 staff members recruited without due process.
The instruction was issued at a meeting on February 23 involving the Minister, the NSA Board and the Director General, following earlier concerns that the recruitment had been carried out without the required clearance from the Public Services Commission and the Ministry of Finance.
The Board had previously asked Mr Ankrah to cancel the appointments, noting that some of the positions filled, including that of Chief Operations Officer, do not exist within the NSA’s approved organisational structure. Under public sector regulations, vacancies must be advertised, and candidates vetted through a formal process before being placed on government payroll.
According to reports, the matter caused tension between the Board and management, with questions also raised about how the affected staff were being paid, as their remuneration was reportedly not processed through the Authority’s accounts.
The Minister’s intervention has now resolved the impasse, with the Director General expected to comply with the directive.
The NSA currently has about 121 staff at its headquarters as administrative reforms continue at the Authority.
