The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has entered the concluding stretch of its mandate after securing an approved extension to complete sweeping reforms and deliver transparent elections to the sport’s governing body.

Inaugurated on September 29, 2025, by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams in the wake of two boxer fatalities that prompted the National Sports Authority (NSA) to dissolve the previous Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board, the GBIMC has moved with considerable pace to stabilise and restructure professional boxing in Ghana.

Under the leadership of former GBA President Samir Captan and Vice Chairman Azumah Nelson, the Committee has since restored sanctioned bouts, enforced strict medical and anti-doping protocols, secured athlete insurance partnerships, and delivered a string of major events, including the Tarkwa Boxing Explosion, Legacy Rise Showdown, Battle of Gbagladza, Cabic Big Fight Night, RBS Boxing Masterpiece, and Best of Bukom II.

The GBIMC submitted a detailed progress report to the Minister and the NSA Director General alongside a formal extension request. The extension, which was granted with clear guidelines, sets out a structured roadmap spanning two phases. The February to April 2026 window will focus on completing outstanding reforms, including reviewing licensing standards and disciplinary codes, establishing the Independent Medical Commission, rolling out a digital health database and administrative portal, expanding insurance and medical schemes, and finalising constitutional amendments. Elections for a new executive board are scheduled between May and June 2026.

A key governance milestone was a major stakeholder meeting held on December 18, 2025, which addressed outstanding challenges across governance, legal, operational, and safety dimensions.

The Committee has indicated that a stakeholder meeting and press briefing will be convened to outline next steps, and it is calling on all stakeholders to consolidate the gains made in order to safeguard the future of professional boxing in Ghana.
