Saturday, 21 February 2026, marked a defining moment at the ongoing Niger Delta Games in Edo State, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, intensified Nigeria’s grassroots talent discovery drive on Day Three of the competition.

The day was dedicated to Grassroots Engagement and Talent Discovery, with the SSA personally observing competitions in athletics, swimming, boxing, Tennis and chess—sports regarded as vital pipelines for Nigeria’s next generation of elite athletes.

From the tracks to the swimming pool, boxing ring and chess boards, Hon. Adeboye closely monitored performances, engaging technical officials and coaches to identify young athletes showing exceptional promise, discipline and competitive intelligence.

A major highlight of the day was a motivational and interactive session between the SSA and the young athletes. During the engagement, Hon. Adeboye delivered a message of hope, resilience and self-belief, reminding the athletes that every champion’s journey begins with consistency, discipline and character.

“This stage you are on today can shape your future if you stay focused, disciplined and committed. Nigeria believes in you, and opportunities will come if you prepare yourself for them,” the SSA told the athletes.

The session also featured an open question-and-answer segment, where young competitors freely asked questions about balancing sports with education, overcoming challenges, and pathways to national and international representation.

The SSA responded with practical guidance, encouraging them to remain patient, avoid shortcuts, and trust the process of development.

Beyond the athlete engagement, Hon. Adeboye held a media interaction, where he reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to grassroots sports under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He stressed that platforms like the Niger Delta Games are central to identifying talent early and building sustainable pathways for youth development.

Observers described Day Three as one of the most impactful moments of the Games so far, blending competition, mentorship and inspiration into a powerful statement of purpose.

As the Games progress, the SSA reaffirmed that outstanding talents discovered will be closely monitored and integrated into broader national sports development programmes—ensuring that the dreams ignited on this stage are nurtured well beyond the competition.
