Members of Parliament on Thursday, February 19, 2026, engaged in a heated debate on the floor of the House following reports of an attack on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso that left eight people dead.
The discussion began with calls for a parliamentary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the safety of Ghanaians living and doing business abroad.
However, proceedings took a partisan turn when Samuel Atta Mills, a Member of Parliament for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Constituency in the Central Region on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he described as the failed Pwalugu irrigation dam project.
He argued that significant public funds were invested in the proposed Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, which was intended to boost local agricultural production and reduce import dependence, but had not delivered the expected outcomes.
Members of the Minority objected strongly to the remarks, insisting that the debate remain focused on the attack in Burkina Faso rather than domestic political disagreements.
The protest led to exchanges across the aisle, as MPs traded accusations and defended their respective party records.
Despite the tense exchanges, Parliament is expected to further deliberate on possible steps, including a formal inquiry, to address concerns surrounding the attack and the protection of Ghanaian nationals abroad.
