Nigerian strikers Osimhen & Onuachu break records in Turkey

Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu are rewriting the record books at their respective Turkish clubs, with the Super Eagles strikers delivering exceptional performances that have placed them among the elite players in the Turkish Super Lig, PETER AKINBO writes

Victor Osimhen provided two assists as Galatasaray thrashed Eyüpspor 5-1 in their Turkish Super Lig clash on Friday, while Onuachu scored his 16th goal of the season on Saturday to emerge as the sole leader in the scoring charts as the duo continued their record-breaking forms in Turkey.

Osimhen’s assists helped the champions get their third consecutive victory. The Nigerian forward first delivered a cross for Yunus Akgün to head home the opening goal just two minutes in, before winning possession inside the box to tee up Mauro Icardi for his second goal three minutes into the second half.

The performance marked a historic milestone for Osimhen, as he recorded two assists in a league match for the first time in his professional career spanning 229 matches.

Osimhen has been breaking records at an astonishing pace since joining Galatasaray. The 27-year-old became the fastest player in the club’s history to reach 50 goals, achieving the feat in just 59 appearances during a 3-1 victory over Fatih Karagümrük in January. The previous record was held by Argentine striker Mauro Icardi, who reached the milestone in 68 games, while Bafetimbi Gomis had taken 74 matches.

The Nigerian has also surpassed Gomis on another front, becoming Galatasaray’s fourth-highest scoring foreign player of all time with 52 goals. He achieved this during a 3-0 win over Rizespor in February, moving past Gomis’ 51-goal tally. Only Icardi with 73 goals, Gheorghe Hagi with 72, and Milan Baros with 61 remain ahead of him on the all-time list.

Earlier in February, Osimhen reached his 200th professional career goal with a penalty in Galatasaray’s 4-0 victory over Kayserispor. The former Napoli striker also equalled Radamel Falcao’s Galatasaray record during the Kayserispor win, becoming only the second player since 2015 to score eight league goals without missing a single penalty.

While Osimhen continues his record-breaking run at Galatasaray, compatriot Paul Onuachu has been equally impressive at Trabzonspor, despite his side’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Fenerbahçe on Saturday.

The former Southampton striker has now scored in his last five games across all competitions, demonstrating remarkable consistency in front of goal.

Onuachu has surpassed his previous highest goal tally for Trabzonspor, having now scored 16 goals in 19 league appearances this season. He scored 15 goals in 21 appearances during his loan spell with the club in the 2023/24 season.

Earlier in February, Onuachu made Trabzonspor history by becoming the first foreign player to score in both league meetings against Samsunspor in a single Super Lig season. He netted a brace in Trabzonspor’s 3-0 victory over Samsunspor, having previously found the net in the reverse fixture, a 1-1 draw at Papara Park in August 2025.

The Nigerian’s remarkable form earned him recognition as the best player in the Turkish Super Lig for October, during which he scored two goals and registered one assist in three league outings. He has also claimed the Goal of the Month award twice this season.

Onuachu’s only blemish came in January when his perfect penalty record ended during a 1-1 draw with Antalyaspor. After scoring from the spot to equalise, he missed a second penalty in the 79th minute, marking his first miss after five successful conversions in the Super Lig.
