National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has told supporters in Gomoa Central that their vote in the 2024 elections set the country on a new path, reflecting public confidence in the party’s direction.
Speaking Thursday during his Thank You tour in the Gomoa Central Constituency of Central Region, Asiedu Nketia said the outcome of the polls demonstrates Ghanaians believe the country now has good government. Let us pray that God grants President Mahama the knowhow to reset the country, he stated. All we have to do now is the work that will transform this country.
He described the visit as an expression of gratitude rather than celebration. We are here to thank you for voting for the NDC in the 2024 elections, he said. The Bible tells us that even God requires appreciation and that is why we are here.
Addressing the mixed voting pattern in the constituency, Asiedu Nketia acknowledged that while the presidential candidate received strong backing, the party’s parliamentary candidate did not secure victory. You showed your love by voting massively for President Mahama, he said. You did not vote for our parliamentary candidate, but we are still grateful.
The NDC chairman assured traditional leaders that their concerns had been heard. I have taken note of all the demands your chiefs have made, he told the gathering. We will take it up and ensure that they are all addressed.
He maintained that focus going forward must be delivery. According to him, the mandate was granted because voters believed it is only John Mahama who can deliver this country from its challenges.
Asiedu Nketia stressed that the victory was a collective national effort, acknowledging roles played by pastors, imams and traditional leaders who prayed and worked toward peaceful elections. He added that even supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) recognised the need for unity, noting that the country’s challenges require all Ghanaians to come together to move the nation forward.
The Thank You tour forms part of the NDC’s broader post election strategy to reconnect with supporters, gather feedback on government performance and reinforce internal party structures across constituencies. Asiedu Nketia visited multiple constituencies in Central Region including Effutu, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam and Gomoa West between February 12 and 13.
At Effutu on Wednesday, he said the tour provides opportunity to hear directly from grassroots supporters about government record in delivering manifesto promises. One of the reasons for this visit is to learn from you how we have performed as a government in fulfilling promises made in our manifesto, he stated.
The NDC chairman emphasised that feedback from supporters at community level is crucial for improving governance and strengthening public confidence in the party. He assured supporters that concerns raised during the tour would be forwarded to appropriate ministries, departments and agencies for action.
Asiedu Nketia also addressed frustrations among party members over appointments, urging them to remain calm and patient. Speaking at Winneba in Effutu Constituency, he acknowledged limitations exist because government is committed to operating lean administration.
I am aware that some of you are unhappy because you did not receive an appointment upon our return to power, he said. This is understandable. However, he cautioned supporters not to allow disappointment to push them away from the party, warning such decisions could later lead to regret.
He urged party faithful to remain loyal and take pride in the party’s achievements regardless of whether they received appointments. The contributions and sacrifices of grassroots members are well recognised and appreciated within the party, he stated.
At Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Asiedu Nketia recalled years of intense political battles in the constituency, describing it as both a political battleground and personal stronghold. He traced his connection to the area through his friendship with late Dr Joseph Kweku Enos, whom he first met in Parliament.
The NDC chairman recounted meeting Cassiel Ato Forson, now Minority Leader, when the latter was a young entrepreneur based in the United States interested in politics. He alleged the New Patriotic Party persistently targeted Forson during election periods, particularly in 2020 when tensions escalated in the constituency.
President John Dramani Mahama won the December 7, 2024 presidential election with 56.55 percent of valid votes cast, defeating NPP candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who received 41.61 percent. The NDC also secured majority in Parliament with 183 seats compared with NPP’s 88 seats.
The victory returned the NDC to power after eight years in opposition following defeat in the 2016 elections. Mahama was inaugurated January 7, 2025, beginning his second non consecutive term as president after previously serving from 2012 to 2017.
The Thank You tour represents the first major grassroots engagement by party leadership since taking office. It provides platform for assessing early performance, addressing member concerns and reinforcing party cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.
Asiedu Nketia assumed the NDC chairmanship in December 2022 after defeating incumbent Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo at the party’s national congress. He previously served as party general secretary for 17 years from 2005 to 2022, becoming one of Ghana’s most recognizable political figures.
His elevation to chairman marked significant leadership transition within the party and positioned him as key figure in coordinating internal party affairs, fundraising and grassroots mobilization strategies. The pharmaceutical entrepreneur turned politician brings decades of organizational experience to the role.
