MTN Ghana urges customer support to save lives

By Dennis Peprah

Berekum (Bono), Feb. 14, GNA – Mr Kofi Owusu, the Bono Regional Manager of MTN Ghana has appealed to customers and Ghanaians, for support towards stocking enough blood units at the various public health facilities, nationwide.

He said as major referral facilities, the various Teaching, Regional and District hospitals nationwide ought to store enough blood, to save the precious lives of clients who visited those centres.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of separate blood donation exercises to mark the Valentine’s Day celebration, Mr Owusu noted that oftentimes many pregnant women and accident victims required blood to survive. The Sunyani Teaching Hospital (STH) in collaboration with the Berekum Holy Family Catholic Hospital with support from the MTN Ghana organised the events held at the premises of the

Berekum Senior High School (SHS) and the All for Christ SHS in the Berekum Municipality. It offered an opportunity for the eligible students to donate their blood voluntarily to stock the blood bank of the STH. Mr Owusu said it was unfortunate and unacceptable for any pregnant woman to die during childbirth just because of lack of blood, saying that it was everybody’s responsibility to ensure that the public health facilities had enough blood at their banks. He said that was why the MTN had taken the responsibility to support the conduct of blood donation exercises every year in the Valentine’s season, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility giving back to society. Mr Owusu said the company, which provided essential items and meals to the donors, targeted to raise 450 blood pints in the exercise, and commended the students for their support. Earlier, Mr Enoch Owusu, the Head of the Blood Bank at the STH, said referral cases had increased at the facility, saying that the unit was open for people to voluntarily walk in to donate their blood all year long.
