INEC may shift 2027 elections over Ramadan concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acknowledged widespread concerns about the timing of the 2027 general elections, which coincide with the holy month of Ramadan, and said it may seek legislative intervention if necessary.

In a statement issued on Friday by National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who chairs the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC explained that the election timetable was drawn strictly in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the commission’s Guidelines and Regulations for the Conduct of Elections (2019).

According to the schedule, presidential and National Assembly elections are fixed for Saturday, February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will follow on Saturday, March 6, 2027.

Haruna noted that while the dates comply with constitutional requirements, INEC is sensitive to concerns raised by stakeholders about the overlap with Ramadan.

“The commission has taken due notice of concerns expressed regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with nationally recognised holidays and observances. INEC remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections,” Haruna said.

He added that the commission is consulting widely and may seek legislative intervention to adjust the timetable if necessary, while ensuring any changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory provisions.

INEC promised to keep Nigerians informed of any adjustments.

The commission had earlier scheduled party primaries between May 22 and June 20, 2026 for candidate nominations.

Political figures including Atiku Abubakar and former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad have already urged INEC to reconsider the February 20 date, warning that holding elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout among Muslims.
