The Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) is no longer being recognized by the country’s National Sports Authority (NSA), which formally withdrew its recognition on January 7, 2026
Following the NSA’s decision, the GSA and its Executive Council are no longer permitted to oversee national competitions, selections for international competitions or the general conduct of aquatic sports in Ghana. Executive Council members are also prohibited from representing the country at any local or international aquatics-related events.
The NSA cited a reported failure on the part of the GSA to submit audited financial accounts, comply with the requirements of its constitution, or provide satisfactory responses to issues raised by the NSA.
The suspension of the GSA does not completely inhibit competitive swimming in the country, as any swimming club activities, training or competitions that are not supervised by the organization will still be allowed to continue.
A national sports oversight organization, the NSA aims to promote and encourage the development of and participation in amateur and professional sports in Ghana, in addition to coordinating efforts to raise the standards of sports throughout the country.
The GSA has already issued a response, rejecting the move as unlawful and damaging to the future of aquatics in the country and demanding the immediate retraction of the decision.
According to the GSA, its derecognition violates established sports regulations and undermines years of investment in swimming. The association claims that the NSA did not follow mandatory procedures under the Sports Regulations code established by the Authority in 2023, notably failing to provide a formal notice or a chance for the GSA to respond prior to invoking their decision.
Aside from the possible legal ramifications, the GSA also expressed concern that its inability to oversee aquatic sports could have serious consequences for swimming in Ghana, highlighting the government’s investment in the Borteyman Aquatics Centre, which helped boost the nation’s status as a regional hub for the sport.
Ghana was previously awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 African Junior, Senior and Masters Swimming Championships, which the GSA fears could now be at risk due to the NSA’s decision.
In its response to the NSA’s letter, the GSA indicated that failure to restore recognition of the organization would result in an appeal to the Minister of Sports.
