UTAG-KNUST backs calls for removal of GTEC boss and deputy

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-KNUST) has thrown its weight behind calls for the removal of Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Director-General and Prof. Augustine Ocloo, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The decision followed an Executive Emergency Meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026, in which the branch resolved to align with a similar call by UTAG’s University of Ghana branch, issued on January 19, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, UTAG-KNUST criticised the leadership of GTEC, saying the Commission has become a “tool for personal vindictiveness” and has failed to improve standards in Ghana’s public universities.

The statement cited several issues, including:

-Poor student-lecturer ratios (STR), which continue to deteriorate.

-Ambiguities in handling post-retirement contracts and office-holding extensions, leaving faculty in limbo.

-Lack of guidance to finance directors on whether to remove retired lecturers from payrolls, creating uncertainty on campuses.

-Laboratories and lecture halls in need of renovation, retooling, and expansion.

UTAG-KNUST said these failures have left university management “helpless” and are hindering the delivery of quality education to Ghanaian students.

The association urged the Chief of Staff at the Presidency to prevail on President John Dramani Mahama to remove the D-G and DD-G for incompetence.

UTAG-KNUST also called on the two officials to resign by January 31, 2026, warning that further industrial action may follow if the matter is not addressed.
