Accra, Ghana – The Creative Arts Agency of Ghana is taking proactive steps to safeguard the well-being of its creative community, particularly those navigating the challenges of aging. In a move hailed as a significant development for the industry, the Agency has announced the establishment of a dedicated department focused on welfare, counseling, and mediation.

This initiative, born from the governing board’s commitment to supporting artists and creatives throughout their careers, is firmly rooted in the Creative Art Industry Act, 2020 (Act 1048). Specifically, Section 11, clause 2(f) of the Act which mandates the Agency to create any department that the Board considers necessary for the attainment of the objects of the Agency.

Mr. Anthony Obeng Afrane, Board Chair of the Creative Arts Agency, underscored the importance of this decision. “We recognise that many creatives dedicate their lives to enriching our culture and providing entertainment. It is our responsibility to ensure they have access to the support and resources they need, especially as they transition into the later stages of their careers,” he stated.

The newly formed department will serve as a vital resource for creatives facing a range of personal and professional challenges. Welfare services will encompass practical assistance with healthcare, housing, and financial planning. Counseling services will provide a safe space for individuals to address mental health concerns, navigate career transitions, and cope with the unique pressures of the creative industry.

Furthermore, the mediation component will offer a neutral platform for resolving disputes within the creative community. This will be particularly valuable for artists dealing with contract disagreements, copyright issues, or other conflicts that can hinder their creative pursuits.

Mr. Afrane highlighted that this initiative is aligned with the broader vision of President John Mahama to champion the welfare of creatives. “President Mahama has consistently emphasised the importance of supporting the post-active life experiences of artists,” he explained. “This department is a tangible expression of that commitment, ensuring that creatives can continue to thrive and contribute to our society even as they age.”

The establishment of the welfare department marks a significant step forward in recognising the vital role of creatives in Ghana’s cultural landscape. By providing targeted support to aging artists, the Creative Arts Agency is not only addressing immediate needs but also investing in the long-term health and vitality of the creative sector.

The department’s services will be accessible to all registered members of the Creative Arts Agency, ensuring that a wide range of artists, including musicians, writers, visual artists, filmmakers, and performers, can benefit from its resources. The Agency plans to roll out a comprehensive awareness campaign to inform creatives about the available services and encourage them to utilise the department’s resources.

The establishment of the welfare, counseling, and mediation department is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of countless creatives in Ghana, fostering a sense of security and well-being that allows them to continue pursuing their artistic passions with confidence and dignity. It also sets a precedent for other nations to prioritise the welfare of their creative communities, recognising their invaluable contributions to society.

As the department takes shape, the Creative Arts Agency anticipates working closely with stakeholders across the industry to identify and address the specific needs of aging creatives, ensuring that they receive the support necessary to live fulfilling and productive lives. This proactive approach will not only benefit individual artists but also contribute to the overall strength and sustainability of Ghana’s creative arts sector.
