The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Security Secretariat is set to launch a special joint security operation on Monday, January 26, 2026, to clamp down on commercial transport operators charging illegal fares within Greater Kumasi.

The operation will be led by the Regional Security Liaison Officer, Captain (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari, and will involve over 100 personnel from the regional office, supported by officers from various district security units.

The exercise targets commercial drivers, conductors, and loading boys who unlawfully increase transport fares. Those arrested will be handed over to the Ghana Police Service for prosecution.

The 14-hour daily operation will continue until there is a noticeable change in the behaviour of commercial transport operators.

To minimise the impact on commuters, National Security, in collaboration with Metro Mass Transit, will deploy at least 10 buses to transport passengers from selected communities to Kejetia and other destinations.

Captain (Rtd.) Jabari stressed that the exercise is intended to instill discipline and ensure respect for the rule of law, rather than punish transport operators.

“As a transport operator, you have no right to take the law into your own hands by increasing transport fares,” he said.

The operation forms part of broader efforts to protect commuters and maintain order within the commercial transport sector in Kumasi.
