Drama unfolded in the Ghana Premier League on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when Vision FC’s technical team and players caused a 20-minute delay, forcing the referee to use a phone to review a controversial goal.

The match against Medeama SC, which ended 2-1 in favor of the Tarkwa-based club was not televised.

However, videos circulating online show an extraordinary scene: players and staff rushing onto the pitch, surrounding the referee, and demanding a review.

In the unusual twist, the referee temporarily paused the game to consult a video on the phone, ultimately awarding the goal to Vision FC.

Breakdown: How much Senegal made from their 2025 AFCON victory

The incident has drawn attention because the Ghana Premier League does not currently allow VAR, making the “Phone Assistant Referee” moment both unprecedented and controversial.

Following the match, Vision FC have been charged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for breaches of the 2025 Premier League Regulations and the 2019 Disciplinary Code.

According to the GFA, the club failed to control members of their technical team and substitutes, who invaded the field and caused the disruption.

Supporters were also said to have encroached onto the pitch.

Vision FC have been given until Wednesday, January 21, 2026, to submit a formal defence to the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee, which will determine whether sanctions are necessary.

The incident has sparked wider debates about crowd control, technical area conduct, and the pressures referees face in high-stakes matches in the Ghana Premier League.
