Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has described the football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria as one rooted in competition and national pride, rather than animosity.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Gyan addressed the long-held perceptions surrounding the fixture.
“Ghana and Nigeria is a good rivalry. It is not hatred or something. We always want to challenge ourselves. They always want to beat us in everything, even with Jollof,” Gyan said.
The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker highlighted that the rivalry goes beyond football, spilling into culture, music, and everyday banter, yet remains amicable.
“But at the end of the day, we love each other. We are very good rivals. Anybody who says we hate each other, that’s not it. We love each other, but we don’t want the other side to win. Ghana and Nigeria love each other,” he added.
Both nations are among Africa’s most successful footballing countries. Their encounters have influenced World Cup qualifying campaigns, Africa Cup of Nations runs, and regional tournament storylines for decades.
Ghana famously eliminated Nigeria from the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on away goals, while Nigeria has historically had the upper hand in several AFCON knockout clashes. These results have fueled a rivalry that remains vibrant among fans and in the media on both sides.
