Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution has called for stronger collaboration in Niger
The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution has called for stronger collaboration between citizens and security agencies to defeat insecurity across Nigeria, following deadly attacks in parts of Niger State that left about 60 people dead and several others abducted.
Recall that people, including children, were killed in renewed terror attacks by suspected bandits in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas of Niger State.
The violence occurred less than a month after over 300 pupils, students, and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, were abducted in the same area.
In a statement signed by its Director-General Joseph Ochogwu and issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the institute described recent attacks on communities in Agwara and Borgu local government areas as “desperate attempts” by fleeing bandits, insurgents, and terrorist groups currently under sustained pressure from security forces.
According to the IPCR, the attacks were intended to instil fear and intimidate residents, particularly in areas where security operations are ongoing.
“These acts are meant to raise apprehension, create fear, and intimidate citizens, particularly those in the areas of operation.
“We are calling for caution and urging more cooperation and collaboration with security forces to ensure that these elements are completely defeated. This is a clear sign that their end is in sight,” the statement said.
The institute also commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as a clear and decisive directive to security agencies to end insecurity in the country.
“We commend the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Tinubu, for giving a clear directive to the military, security, and all forces to ensure that these elements are apprehended and brought to book,” the statement said.
IPCR noted that increased cooperation between citizens and security agencies would help strengthen trust and confidence between the government and the people.
“This collaboration will enhance state citizenship relationships, fostering trust and confidence between citizens and the government.
“We need to see more of this in the coming year,” it added.
Beyond immediate security measures, the institute stressed the importance of addressing the underlying causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and inadequate access to basic amenities.
According to IPCR, tackling these challenges would help create an environment less conducive to criminality and violent extremism.
The institute also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities, emphasising that collective action was critical to restoring peace and building a safer country.
“Defeating insecurity requires collective effort,” the statement noted.
