The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has revealed that Ghana’s digital road tolling project is nearing the final stages of its bidding process, with an operator set to be selected soon.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, January 5, Agbodza emphasised that the procurement process, which has already gone through two stages, is expected to conclude by the end of the month.
He underscored that following the selection of the operator, public education on the new tolling system will begin.
According to Agbodza, his outfit will work closely with the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation to ensure proper enforcement and compliance once the system is launched.
He assured that a detailed update, including the official launch date and operator details, will be provided within the next two weeks.
“We are introducing a new road toll where we don’t need physical toll booths. The ECOWAS leaders recommend that across the region, road tolling should now be rolled out on digital platforms, with no impediment in terms of physical tollbooths. We are actually ahead of that schedule.
“I am aware that the stage they are at is the bidding [stage]. The ministry is working together on a particular dataset, which determines exactly the vehicular traffic volumes across the public road network. That has been happening for the past month.
“I am aware that ends this month. We’ve gone through two stages of the bidding process already. I will be able to come back to you in the course of the next two weeks to tell you exactly when the overall procurement program will end and when the operator will be selected,” he stated.
