James Kwasi Appiah led Sudan to the Round 16 of the 2025 AFCON James Kwasi Appiah led Sudan to the Round 16 of the 2025 AFCON

Ghanaian coach James Kwasi Appiah has bowed out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Sudan lost 3–1 to Senegal in their Round of 16 tie.

Sudan started the game as the better side, pressuring their opponents with incessant attacks, which led to the opening goal scored by Aamir Abdallah Yunis with a fine finish.

Afterward, Senegal reignited their performance with attacking play and created chances, with Everton midfielder Pape Gueye leveling the score before adding another to make it 2–1 before halftime.

In the second half, the Sudanese side had a brilliant opportunity to equalize, but the chance was squandered to the dismay of Kwasi Appiah.

Senegal grew into the game gradually, and their consistency paid off in the 77th minute when Ibrahim Mbaye netted the third goal to cement their victory.

Senegal will face the winner between Tunisia and Mali in the quarter‑final stage to decide who progresses.

This result ends the road for James Kwasi Appiah, who has worked to turn around the fortunes of the Sudanese team despite the country’s ongoing challenges with war and violence.

The milestone further highlights the growing impact of the former Black Stars coach, who guided Sudan to one of its most successful AFCON campaigns to date.

Under his leadership, Sudan displayed renewed tactical discipline and resilience, enabling them to compete strongly against more established African sides.
