E-levy and matters arising; why is Dr. Bawumia silent?

It is becoming a strange picture, to see an ongoing combination of economic and digitalisation debate in Ghana, and the vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is loudly silence on it. It cannot be that he has no opinion or lacks authority on such matters. So, why is he silent?

This has been agitating the minds of many Ghanaians, especially those who rely mostly on the Vice President’s expert contributions to such important national debates.

In his earlier comment about taxing mobile money, Dr. Bawumia said on Peace Fm’s Kokrooko program that, he does not believe in taxing Momo. But, when the government, in which he is head of the economic management team, now proposes to tax Momo, his silence cannot be enough. He ought to speak.

Chief Executive Officer of the African Energy Consortium, Kwame Jantuah could not fathom the Veep’s silence either.

Mr Jantuah believes that since the e-levy hinges on digitalisation, it will be prudent to hear from the Vice President who is championing the digitalisation agenda.

“Why is the Vice president silent,” he quizzed.

It is a fair call, considering how Dr. Bawumia usually organises lectures to state both his principles and that of his government, and further rationalises the NPP’s policies.

He must not only speak when he feels to, he must as well be forced to state his opinion, and whether he agreed with the government or the masses on matters like the E-levy.

He loves right in between the pros and cons of this matter. Where does he belong, with the digitalisation, or with an apparent digitalisation killer like E-levy?
