Hwang Dong-hyuk is known for his sharp social commentary, and he has a history of making films about social issues. His second film, The Crucible (Silenced), was about the scandal at South Korea’s Gwangju Inhwa School for the Deaf. An institution has a history of mistreating students. The film went on to spark a massive anti-child-abuse movement.

According to Comicbook, the writer of The Squid Game says, “I took up filmmaking because I was so frustrated by all these unresolved social issues I saw.” We can see how much the world has changed us through films. You can’t change society with a single film, but considering the aftermath of its release, we can consider the power of film in positively affecting society.”

Squid Game is streaming on Netflix.
