Have you ever wondered why one of Ghana’s prominent healthcare institutions is called the 37 Military Hospital?

The specialist hospital, which is located in Accra, plays a critical role in both military and civilian healthcare.

It is a 400-bed general hospital and as a military hospital, its primary objective is to provide healthcare to military personnel and their families, civilian employees of the Ministry of Defence and their families and ex-service personnel, all of whom are grouped as Entitled Personnel.

But the 37 Military Hospital has a rich history linked to the Second World War.

History behind the name

The hospital was established on July 4, 1941, by British General George Giffard, during the period when Ghana was known as the Gold Coast under British colonial rule.

Its primary purpose was to provide medical care for soldiers injured during military campaigns, particularly in the Burma campaign and other operations in West Africa.

According to a report by Explory, the hospital’s name has an interesting historical significance.

It was the 37th military hospital built in the British colonies of West Africa, and it was originally called No 37 General Hospital.

The name was changed to 37 Military Hospital of the Gold Coast in 1956 and was

later expanded and opened to the public, although the hospital continues to be staffed primarily by military personnel.

“The 37 Military Hospital stands as a testament to Ghana’s resilience and its commitment to the well-being of its people. Originally established in 1941, the 37 Military Hospital was built by British General George Giffard. Its initial purpose was to treat troops injured during World War II.

“The number 37 signifies its place as the 37th military hospital constructed in the British colony of West Africa. Over time, the 37 Military Hospital expanded its services, opening its doors to the public while maintaining its military ethos,” it noted.

Since 1991, the German company Hospital Engineering GmbH has played a significant role in the phased development of the 37 Military Hospital and is responsible for maintenance of the equipment at the facility.
