Ghana joined nations across the globe to commemorate World Food Day 2025 under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.” The national celebration, held at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in Accra, brought together government officials, development partners, farmers, civil society, and the media to reflect on collective efforts toward a more resilient and sustainable agrifood system.
This year’s celebration held special significance as it coincided with the 80th Anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), marking eight decades of partnership, progress, and purpose in the global fight against hunger and malnutrition. The event underscored that achieving food security and improved nutrition for all requires sustained collaboration and shared responsibility among all stakeholders. World Food Day remains a powerful call for unity and action.
“FAO has been a steadfast partner in Ghana’s agricultural development, working closely with MoFA to advance food security and nutrition. Together, we are implementing impactful initiatives in irrigation, post-harvest management, and livestock development”. Said Hon Eric Opoku, Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture.
The theme of the event, Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future, underscores the importance of collaboration among governments, farmers, youth, women, the private sector, and development partners to advance sustainable agrifood systems. Eighty years ago, the founders of FAO believed that hunger could be defeated through global cooperation and solidarity. Today, that conviction continues to guide our work in Ghana and across the world.” Said Ms Priya Gujadhur, FAO Representative in Ghana, noted that
“World Food Day reminds us that food security is not just about producing enough, it is about ensuring that everyone, everywhere, can access safe, nutritious, and affordable food. The United Nations stands firmly with Ghana in building resilient agrifood systems that leave no one behind. Together, hand in hand, we can create a future where every child, every woman, and every farmer has the opportunity to thrive.” Said Zia Choudhury, UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana
The 2025 World Food Day celebration in Ghana reaffirmed the country’s commitment to achieving food and nutrition security while highlighting the enduring partnerships that drive progress toward Zero Hunger (SDG 2).
