2.4 million Ghanaians vulnerable to food insecurity – Report

0

More than 2.4 million Ghanaians representing 7.4 per cent of the population between March and May this year are currently classified as vulnerable to food insecurity, a new report has revealed.
The number is projected to slightly decrease by two million people (6.3 per cent) from June to August owing to ongoing government interventions in agriculture and health sectors.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation defines food insecurity as “A situation where people lack access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and preference for an active and healthy life.”
The report titled March 2025 Food and Nutrition Security Situation Ghana: A Cadre Hormonise Analysis was developed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s Statistics, Research, and Information Directorate (SRID), in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS).
The report with the objective to evaluate the impact of factors causing food and nutrition insecurity, including the dry spell in the eight regions of the country in 2024, attributed the problem to climate change and economic pressures on vulnerable communities.
It used the Cadre Harmonisé (CH) analytical framework, a widely used tool in West Africa for assessing acute food and nutrition insecurity.
“Within the West Africa Sub-region, Ghana fared better than all her neighbours except Cote d’Ivoire and Benin,” the report released in March stated.
The report emphasised the urgent need for expanded social protection and targeted interventions to protect the most vulnerable populations.
The report said the food insecurity situation was particularly dire in the northern regions, which experienced prolonged dry spells in 2024, affecting food production and livelihoods.
“Although Ghana has fared better than most countries in the sub-region, this figure is still concerning,” the report states.
It said urgent action was needed to link those vulnerable groups to existing social protection programmes to buffer the effects of economic and environmental shocks.
The report said despite the challenges, Ghana’s performance compared favourably to other West African nations.
The report revealed that only Côte d’Ivoire and Benin had lower proportions of vulnerable populations.
Nonetheless, it warns that complacency could reverse the progress made.
“The government must continue and expand resilience-building efforts to ensure long-term food security,” the report recommends.
“Projects such as the Feed Ghana Programme and the Aqua-Cage Fish Project should be scaled up, especially in districts identified as being in crisis or emergency conditions,” it added.
The report called for increased investment in early warning systems, climate-resilient agriculture, and community-based nutrition programmes to prevent further deterioration.
It also emphasised the importance of data-driven policymaking and inter-agency coordination to tackle the root causes of hunger.
The report expressed government’s commitment to food security as a national priority aligned with regional and global development goals.

Watch as Afenyo-Markin lists the ‘sins’ of President Mahama, NDC

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, went in hard at President John Dramani Mahama during the #SavetheJudiciaryDemo on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Reading from the petition, which he described as ‘respectful and decent’, Afenyo-Markin heavily criticised almost every action of the Mahama government, using very strong words against the president and his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Afenyo-Markin claimed that the democratic principles of the country are under attack, saying that “there is a frightening and ominous cloud now looming over our republic as we march today.”

He said that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana was under threat, with institutions mandated to safeguard the country’s liberties being infiltrated by “a ruthless cabal who are determined to cling to power at all cost — a third term agenda.”

He listed the supposed wrongdoings of the Mahama government as follows:

Establishing an unconstitutional ORAL:

The Minority Leader accused Mahama of starting his attack on Ghana’s democracy even before being sworn into office by establishing the ‘unconstitutional’ Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) preparatory committee.

He accused the president of using ORAL to target appointees of the previous New Patriotic Party government while freeing his appointees who were being prosecuted.

“Even before the NDC under President Mahama could assume the reins of government, we saw a violent attack on our constitutional order.

“They established a so-called ORAL, a committee without any legal basis or constitutional backing, which engaged in flagrant illegalities. That was the opening salvo in what has now become a full-blown campaign to dismantle our sacred democratic foundations,” he said.

Using mercenaries to prevent declaration of Ablekuma North parliamentary election results:

Afenyo-Markin also accused President Mahama of preventing the declaration of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results, which he claims was won by the NPP candidate.

“Under candidate Mahama’s leadership, the NDC deployed mercenaries and thugs to polls across the country, and we all know what happened late last year. Honourable Akua Afriyie has won the Ablekuma North seat, the EC is asking for security to enable them to declare, NDC is saying they are not going to provide security.

“What is preventing the IGP — the previous IGP and the current IGP — from providing security for the Electoral Commission to complete its mandate?” he said.

Weaponising the security services:

The Effutu legislator also accused Mahama of weaponising the nation’s security services by deploying them to the homes of their political opponents.

He said that President Mahama’s government has used security operatives to ransack the homes of his political opponents, including former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, and former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

He accused the government of running “a tyranny clothed in robes of democracy.”

An autocrat arbitrarily dismissing senior military officers:

Afenyo-Markin accused President Mahama of becoming autocratic.

He said that the president’s dismissal of senior military officials and invitation of military dictators to his inauguration are signs of an autocratic leader who wants to rule for life.

“Our military, once revered for its non-partisanship, is now being painted in NDC colours. This is a dangerous betrayal of the republic.

“…President Mahama no longer sees himself as a president; he fancies himself as an autocrat and ruler for life.”

Mahama relentlessly attacking the judiciary:

The Minority Leader also accused the president of attacking the judiciary, with the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, being his latest target.

He claimed that the president wants to have a judiciary that bows to the will of a “dictator”.

Bawku Conflict: God has exposed those who peddled ‘wicked lies’ against me

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana

Former Vice President of Ghana and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says God has exposed those who, during the 2024 elections campaign, peddled lies about him regarding the Bawku crisis.

The age-long Bawku conflict escalated few weeks to last year’s elections following accusations by opponents of the New Patriotic Party that its presidential candidate, Dr Bawumia who is a Mamprusis, was supporting Mamprusis against the other faction, the Kusasis.

This led to the Kusaug Traditional Area banning the NPP from engaging in any political campaign in the area.

However, despite the National Democratic Congress’ accusations and its pledge to end the conflict if elected into government, the conflict continues resulting in the death of a number of people.

Speaking in Bolga in the Upper East Region, during the NPP thank you tour, Dr Bawumia decried the unfortunate politicisation of the crisis and fatalities.

“The politicisation of the crisis in Bawku is very unfortunate because some people do that for their own parochial interests, not the peace and stability of the area.”

“They played politics with the situation and went round lying to the people that I was behind it. They said I was buying guns for people to fight. These were the lies they spread against me.”

“By the grace of God, many people have now seen their lies and the truth. Those who peddled these lies have now been exposed. This should be a lesson that nobody should play politics with the Bawku issue”, Dr Bawumia said.

He called for a collective effort to restore lasting peace in Bawku saying “the peace of the area should be the paramount interest of all of us, not personal ambitions”.

“As politicians, let us be careful in using chieftaincy issues to do politics. The NDC have done it and it is now hanging around their neck. I want peace in Bawku more than anybody and I pray the mediation team being led by Otumfuo will be able to bring much-needed peace in Bawku”, he added.

Mendy and Mahrez become first players to win continental titles in Europe, Africa and Asia

Édouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez are players of Al Ahli Édouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez are players of Al Ahli

Édouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez have made football history after helping Al Ahli secure the AFC Champions League Elite title with a 2-0 victory over Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in Jeddah.

The win marks the first time in history that players have won major continental club titles across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The Saudi side dominated the final at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, delivering a composed and clinical performance that secured both team and individual milestones.

Mendy and Mahrez had already conquered Europe, Mendy with Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and Mahrez with Manchester City in 2023.

Both also lifted the Africa Cup of Nations, Mendy with Senegal in 2021 and Mahrez with Algeria in 2019.

Now, with the Asian title added to their careers, the duo have completed a remarkable treble across three continents, a feat no other player has achieved.

Al Ahli’s road to the title began in September during the group stages of the newly formatted AFC Champions League Elite.

After finishing second behind fellow Saudi side Al Hilal, Al Ahli advanced through the knockout rounds with increasing authority.

They reached the final stage, hosted in their home city of Jeddah, and won three consecutive matches to claim their first-ever continental trophy.

In Saturday’s final, Brazilian winger Galeno opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a stunning curling strike into the top-right corner after a simple pass from Roberto Firmino.

The stadium erupted as Al Ahli took control. Just seven minutes later, Firmino turned provider again with a lofted cross from the right flank that found Franck Kessié, who powered a header past Louis Yamaguchi to make it 2-0.

The victory not only delivered Al Ahli their first Asian title but also immortalised two of Africa’s finest, Mendy and Mahrez, as pioneers who have conquered football across three continents.

Journalists threaten 2026 election coverage boycott over safety concerns

0

EC pokesperson Julius Mucunguzi and Mathias Rukundo, the president of Uganda Journalist Association EC pokesperson Julius Mucunguzi and Mathias Rukundo, the president of Uganda Journalist Association

As Uganda marked World Press Freedom Day, the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) called on media professionals to reconsider covering the upcoming 2026 general elections unless the Electoral Commission (EC) provides concrete safety assurances.

Speaking at a public discourse on journalist safety held at Emerald Hotel in Kampala, UJA President Mathias Rukundo highlighted the escalating threats faced by journalists, particularly during electoral periods.

“We need to first get safety assurance from the Electoral Commission, the body responsible for organising and conducting elections,” Rukundo stated. “Unless these issues are addressed by EC, I am calling upon all journalists across the country not to be involved in the 2026 elections coverage.”

Rukundo’s remarks come in the wake of violent incidents during the March 13, 2025, Kawempe North by-election, where over 15 journalists were reportedly attacked by security forces. Victims included reporters from major media houses such as NTV, Daily Monitor newspaper and NBS TV. Several journalists were assaulted, had their equipment confiscated, and were detained without charge.

In response, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi emphasized the indispensable role of the media in the electoral process.

“As EC, we don’t think we can organise free and fair elections without the full involvement of journalists in the election coverage,” Mucunguzi said. “EC highly prioritises journalists in all our activities; the safety of journalists also means the safety of Ugandans.”

Despite these assurances, concerns persist among media professionals. The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) has also expressed alarm over the increasing hostility towards journalists. UPPA President Enoch Matovu highlighted the need for practical support, including affordable digital access and enhanced safety measures.

“Internet is a lifeline for our work, yet it remains expensive. Reducing this cost will empower journalists to serve the public better,” Matovu explained.

He added: “We must ensure such incidents like the disaster in Kawempe by-elections never happen again.”

During the March attacks, Nation Media Group was prompted to withdraw its reporters from covering the Kawempe by-election, citing safety concerns.

On Saturday, human rights activists urged the Ugandan government to uphold press freedom as enshrined in Article 29 1(a) of the 1995 Constitution.

Stylish Fabrics to Pair with Ankara for a More Refined Look

News Hub Creator28min

When aiming for a refined look with Ankara, pairing it with the right fabrics can elevate your outfit significantly. Luxurious materials like silk complement Ankara’s bold patterns by adding a soft, flowing contrast that balances its vibrancy. The smooth texture of silk creates a sophisticated harmony, making the ensemble suitable for formal events while maintaining cultural flair. Similarly, chiffon works well with Ankara because its lightweight and sheer quality adds an elegant drape, softening the overall appearance. Lace is another excellent choice, as its delicate details introduce a feminine touch that contrasts beautifully with Ankara’s geometric designs. By blending lace panels or accents with Ankara, you achieve a polished yet intricate aesthetic perfect for weddings or upscale gatherings.

Satin offers a sleek alternative, its glossy finish enhancing Ankara’s richness without overpowering the print. This combination works particularly well for evening wear, where a balance of shine and structure is desired. For a more understated refinement, linen provides a breathable, matte contrast that tones down Ankara’s intensity while keeping the look chic and relaxed. Velvet, though heavier, introduces depth and luxury, making it ideal for colder seasons when paired with Ankara accents. The plush texture of velvet elevates the fabric’s visual appeal, creating a regal effect. When selecting fabrics to pair with Ankara, consider the occasion and desired level of contrast to ensure a cohesive and refined outcome. Thoughtful combinations not only enhance Ankara’s versatility but also showcase its adaptability in high-fashion contexts.

Save the Judiciary Protest: Demonstrators Submit Petition to Jubilee House

0

By Jesse Ampah Owusu

Accra, May 5, GNA – The “Save The Judiciary” demonstrators, a coalition of political parties protesting Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s suspension, have submitted their petition to Jubilee House.

Mr. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader of Parliament, presented the petition, which was received by Mr. Stan Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations.

Earlier, demonstrators submitted petitions to the Supreme Court and Parliament, expressing their displeasure over the suspension.

Hundreds gathered at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly car park at 0600 hours before marching to the Supreme Court, Parliament House, and Jubilee House.

Political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Party (NDP), Liberal Party of Ghana, People’s National Party, and Ghana Union Movement, joined the protest.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the suspension as a “clandestine” move by President John Dramani Mahama to undermine judicial independence and facilitate his intended third-term bid.

“What is happening is no accident. It is a warning, a threat, a message to every judicial officer that dissent will be crushed and independence punished,” he stated.

“They do not seek a judiciary that upholds the law. They seek one that bows to the will of a dictator,” he added.

Mr. Dogbe, however, insisted that the suspension process aligned with the 1992 Constitution.

“Indeed, before President Akufo-Addo left the Presidency, he himself had started a certain process where issues were brought to him about the Chief Justice and he referred them to the Council of State and that is what President Mahama has done,” he said.

He emphasized that Chief Justice Torkonoo’s suspension followed constitutional procedures and now awaits the Committee’s decision.

The demonstration remained peaceful and orderly, with police ensuring compliance with protest regulations.

No casualties or arrests were reported, as participants adhered to prescribed procedures.

Don’t touch the judiciary if you can’t strengthen it – Ahiagbah to Mahama

0

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to steer clear of any actions that could undermine the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Monday, May 5, Mr Ahiagbah criticised what he described as a politically motivated move by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remove the Chief Justice.

He alleged that the NDC is exploiting weaknesses in the law to carry out a partisan agenda under the guise of legality, noting that “This whole agenda has been cooked. The law is just being used to give effect to their politics,” he claimed.

“It’s not an illegal thing — it’s a political thing, and that for me is a threat to our democracy,” he added.

He insisted that preserving the independence of the judiciary was a key dream of the framers of Ghana’s Constitution and cautioned against politicising the judicial system.

“If President Mahama cannot strengthen the judiciary, then he should leave it untouched,” he declared.

He stressed the equal importance of the judiciary, legislature, and the executive arm in a democratic system, and warned that any attempt to tamper with the judiciary undermines the very foundation of Ghana’s constitutional framework.

According to him, “Nothing will break in this country if the Chief Justice remains in office and the judiciary continues to function independently.”

Mahama slaps Asset Declaration defaulters with 3-month salary forfeiture

0

President John Dramani Mahama has taken disciplinary action against political appointees who failed to meet the mandatory asset declaration deadline of March 31, 2025.

According to the President, information from the Auditor General revealed that some appointees in his administration failed to comply with the directive.

As a consequence, he has ordered that the officials forfeit three months’ salary, which is to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

“On 18th of February 2025, I set a deadline of 31st March for all appointees who are taking office or being nominated at the time to declare assets. An update provided by the Auditor General to my office indicates that some of you failed to meet that deadline.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are forfeiting three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund named after me, Mahama Cares.

“In addition to one month’s salary that I have asked all appointees to donate to the Mahama Cares Trust Fund. So it means that those who omitted to declare their assets by the date, you are paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares,” he said.

President Mahama further disclosed that all appointees who fail to declare assets by May 7,2025, will be dismissed.

Appointees barred from taking gifts, buying state assets

0

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a strict Code of Conduct for all political appointees under his administration, spelling out new rules on ethical behaviour, public accountability, and misuse of office.

The Code, launched at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5, 2025, applies to all ministers, deputy ministers, presidential staffers, chief executive officers, board members, members of the Council of State, and other appointees serving under the Executive. It also binds the President and the Vice-President.

Speaking at the event, Mr Mahama said the initiative formed part of his 120-day social contract with Ghanaians to bring back discipline, integrity and accountability in governance.

“This document is not a ceremonial one,” Mr Mahama said. “It is a living and enforceable code that spells out what is expected of every individual appointed under this administration. This is a government of shared responsibility, and there will be no sacred cows.”

Among its provisions, the Code prohibits appointees from accepting gifts or favours from individuals or businesses with an interest in government decisions.

Mr Mahama acknowledged Ghana’s cultural acceptance of gift-giving but stressed that ethical boundaries must now be observed.

“If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds GH¢20,000, it must be declared,” he said.

“And upon leaving office, the gift must be surrendered unless the President grants written permission for it to be retained.”

He added that government funds, including internally generated fund,s must not be used to purchase hampers or gift items.

The only exception, according to Mr Mahama, would be modest gifts to staff in recognition of excellence or on retirement, and even those must be budgeted for and approved by the Office of the Chief of Staff.

The Code also addresses conflict of interest and nepotism. Mr Mahama said appointees must declare all private business interests, especially those with links to government agencies. They are barred from using their influence to secure contracts or appointments for relatives or close associates.

“Public perception matters,” he stated. “If your actions give even the appearance of bias, you compromise the integrity of your office.”

On ministerial travel, Mr Mahama said all trips outside Ghana, whether official or unofficial, must receive prior clearance from the Chief of Staff. Appointees must also submit a report within 14 days after returning from any official assignment. He cautioned that retroactive approvals would no longer be entertained.

The Code goes further to bar political appointees from purchasing state assets of any kind, land, vehicles, buildings, or shares, either directly or through third parties. “If you attempt to do so and you are found out, your appointment will be terminated,” the President warned.

Violations of the Code will attract sanctions, ranging from public reprimands and suspension to outright dismissal.

To support enforcement, Mr Mahama announced plans to set up a portal for citizens to confidentially report suspected breaches.

The President also referenced his earlier directive requiring all political appointees who took office before March 31, 2025, to declare their assets.

He said those who failed to meet the deadline would lose three months’ salary, in addition to the one-month salary already required as a donation to the MahamaCares Trust Fund.

“If by close of day Wednesday, May 7, 2025, you still have not declared your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed,” Mr Mahama said.

Describing the Code as strict but necessary, he urged appointees to comply fully and lead by example.

“If you abide by this Code, it will help restore the faith of our people in our democracy,” he told the gathering.

“Let us walk this path together with discipline, humility and a clear sense of duty to the people of Ghana.”

Appointees who breach Code of Conduct to face strict sanctions

0

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to political appointees, declaring that his administration will not hesitate to apply strict sanctions to anyone who violates the newly launched Code of Conduct, regardless of their status or influence.

The Code, officially launched on Monday, May 5, sets clear ethical boundaries for public officials. It prohibits, among other things, the awarding of government contracts to oneself, family members, or close associates—actions President Mahama described as a betrayal of public trust.

Addressing the matter, President Mahama underscored the seriousness of the new policy.

“Coding in state companies that deal with government or with your ministries, using insider knowledge for personal benefit, awarding contracts that are connected to yourselves or your close family,” he cautioned.

He emphasized that consequences for such breaches would be non-negotiable, stating that sanctions could include reprimands, suspensions, or even dismissals.

The President also highlighted the need for full transparency and disclosure from all appointees.

“If you are a dormant partner in any business engaging with any business even outside your ministry, you must disclose it in writing to this office.

“Not through a telephone call, not through a relative, but you must submit an official declaration. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action,” he warned.

Retaliatory politics reflects poor Akufo-Addo-Bawumia leadership

Deputy Chief of Staff, Stan Xoese Dogbe Deputy Chief of Staff, Stan Xoese Dogbe

A Deputy Chief of Staff, Stan Xoese Dogbe, has criticised the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the last eight years under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was marred by retaliatory politics.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on May 5, 2025, in a JoyNews report when the conveners of the ‘SaveTheJudiciaryDemo’ presented their petition, Dogbe argued that recent calls to end political retaliation are a tacit admission that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government did not provided effective and fair leadership.

“If this had been the case over the past 8 years, I’m sure the retaliatory politics you mention wouldn’t have occurred. Your reference to retaliatory politics is an admission that the 8 years under Akufo-Addo and Bawumia were not the best,” he indicated.

The ‘SaveTheJudiciaryDemo’ was organised by a coalition of civil society groups, legal practitioners, and concerned citizens calling for judicial reforms and an end to perceived political interference in the judiciary.

Demonstrators demanded for accountability and independence for the country’s justice system and submitted their petition to both Parliament and the Presidency.

Their petition alleges increasing executive influence over judicial decisions and appointments, a trend they say threatens the rule of law and democratic governance.

‘Let me smoke my last 36 sticks of cigarettes’ – Kofi Kinaata ‘jokingly’ responds to health expert

Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata

Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata has responded humorously to the Ashanti Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), after the agency cautioned the public against consuming beverages and porridge served in plastic bags.

It may be recalled that health expert Jackson Adiyiah Nyantakyi, in a viral video, stated that consuming porridge in a plastic bag is equivalent to smoking 36 sticks of cigarettes.

Reacting to the video, Kofi Kinaata took to his X page on May 4, 2025, to express his shock, noting that he has been drinking porridge from plastic bags since the age of two.

“The Bible even says man shall not live by bread alone. This means if you have bread, you should eat it with koko. Now they’re saying drinking porridge from a plastic bag is like smoking 36 sticks of cigarettes. Then that means we started smoking at age two because we drank porridge every morning,” he said.

The musician jokingly pleaded with his fans and the EPA to let him enjoy one final cup of porridge in a plastic bag.

“The porridge they bought for me this morning is also in a plastic bag. Allow me to smoke my last 36 sticks. Someone should bring me a lighter so I can drink my last 36. After this, I won’t do it again. I’ll check into rehab right after,” he added.

Gifts or hampers above GH¢20,000 must be declared – President Mahama tells appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has directed all government appointees to declare any gifts or hampers received in the line of duty that exceed a value of GH¢20,000.

According to President Mahama, this measure is essential for curbing corruption and maintaining public trust in government institutions.

He emphasised that high-value gifts could influence decision-making or be perceived as a form of bribery, and must therefore be openly disclosed.

Speaking at the launch of a new code of conduct for appointees on Monday, May 5, 2025, President Mahama reiterated that all government appointees are barred from engaging in acts that compromise ethical standards, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to integrity in governance.

“We all know our cultural fondness for gifts, but we must now draw a clear line between appreciation and influence. Appointees are prohibited from accepting gifts or favors, especially from companies or individuals with vested interests in government decisions. If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds GH¢20,000, it must be declared. Upon leaving office, such gifts must be surrendered unless expressly permitted by the President to retain them,” he stated.

He further added, “As for hampers and gift items, no government funds, including internally generated funds, are to be used to purchase or distribute them. The only exception is modest gifts presented to staff in recognition of excellence or on retirement.”

This new policy is part of a broader set of guidelines aimed at promoting integrity among public officials and ensuring that government appointees conduct themselves with honesty and impartiality.

Jordan Ayew picks Eto’o over Yaya Toure as greatest African footballer

0

Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has named Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o as the greatest African footballer, ahead of Ivorian icon Yaya Toure.

According to Ayew, Eto’o distinguished himself as one of the continent’s finest players, boasting impressive statistics and delivering magical moments that set him apart from his peers.

He noted that Eto’o, who currently serves as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, had the ability to score crucial goals and change the course of games, helping his teams win major titles, including the UEFA Champions League and numerous other trophies at both club and international levels.

In an interview reported by GhanaSoccerNet, Ayew was asked to choose between Yaya Toure and Eto’o as the greatest African player.

He responded, “For me, it’s Samuel Eto’o. There’s a game to win, and you know Samuel will solve the problem. He always stepped up when the stakes were highest. That’s something you can’t teach. It’s not just about what he won; it’s about how he did it. Samuel Eto’o is the greatest.”

Eto’o enjoyed a stellar career, winning the UEFA Champions League three times, twice with Barcelona and once with Inter Milan.

He also claimed two Africa Cup of Nations titles with Cameroon and was named African Footballer of the Year four times.

Four health workers arrested over theft of medical supply in Bukedea

0

Four health workers attached to Malera Health Centre III and Kabarwa Health Centre III in Bukedea District have been arrested and detained at Bukedea Central Police Station for allegedly stealing medical supplies.

The arrests followed an audit conducted by the State House Health Monitoring Unit (HMU), which uncovered discrepancies in medical supply records.

According to Dr Jerome Mpaata Owagage, Assistant Director at HMU, the audit revealed that 12 boxes of testing kits and other laboratory materials were missing from Malera Health Centre III.

When questioned, health workers claimed the facility’s limited storage space forced them to store supplies elsewhere. However, when the HMU team returned to inspect the returned supplies, they found that the batch numbers belonged to stock meant for Kabarwa Health Centre III, not Malera Health Centre III.

“The staff eventually admitted they had taken the items from Kabarwa Health facility to give false accountability,” Dr Mpaata explained. The HMU team immediately conducted an audit at Kabarwa Health Centre III and found that its store had been emptied, with critical supplies, including Determine test kits, transferred to Malera Health Centre III.

As a result, two staff members from Malera Health Centre III will face charges of abuse of office and embezzlement under the Anti-Corruption Act, while the staff from Kabarwa Health Centre III will be charged with conspiracy to commit a crime.

“All the suspects failed to account for the missing medical items,” Dr Mpaata added.

Bukedea Resident District Commissioner Wilberforce Tukei condemned the theft, stating, “Stealing drugs is not acceptable. President Museveni has spoken against this on multiple occasions. Those who have been caught will face the full force of the law. They are currently in police custody, which is the right place for them.”

Human rights activist Juliet Aluka expressed concern over the persistent issue of drug theft in public health facilities, calling it one of the most pressing challenges the government must urgently address.

“Drug theft is a major problem that the government needs to fight seriously. Combating this vice across the country is difficult because some health workers have devised new ways to cover their tracks,” Ms Aluka said.

The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has highlighted the pervasive issue of drug theft in Uganda’s public health facilities, identifying it as a significant form of corruption that undermines the healthcare system and endangers public health.

According to the IGG’s 2021 report, theft or embezzlement of medicines and equipment is the most common form of corruption in Uganda’s healthcare sector, leading to the diversion of essential drugs from public health facilities to private clinics or unauthorised markets, depriving patients of necessary treatments.

If you haven’t declared your assets by May 7, consider yourself dismissed – Mahama tells appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama has warned that political appointees who failed to declare their assets by the initial March 31 deadline must do so by close of day Wednesday, May 7, 2025 or face immediate dismissal.

The President issued the directive on Monday, May 5, 2025, during the official launch of the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

He said the asset declaration rule is not a formality but a necessary step to curb corruption and abuse of office.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are to forfeit three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund,” Mr Mahama said.

“If by close of day Wednesday, 7th May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed.”

In addition to the three-month salary forfeiture, the affected appointees are already expected to contribute one month’s salary to the Mahama Kess Trust Fund, bringing the total deduction to four months’ pay.

Mr Mahama said asset declaration is a key tool to build public confidence and to prevent officials from enriching themselves through public office.

He said the newly launched Code of Conduct is a binding guide for all political appointees, including ministers, deputy ministers, presidential staffers, chief executives, members of the Council of State, and board members.

“This is a government of shared responsibility, and there will be no sacred cows,” Mr Mahama stated. “The Code applies to the Vice President, myself, the Chief of Staff, and all advisors. We are all bound by its provisions.”

The President outlined strict rules in the Code, including bans on the purchase of state assets, misuse of government funds for gifts or hampers, and receiving gifts worth more than GH¢20,000 without declaration.

“No political appointee under this administration is permitted to purchase state assets, whether land, vehicles, shares, or buildings, directly or indirectly,” Mr Mahama said.

“If you attempt to do so and you are found out, your appointment will be terminated.”

He also announced plans to introduce a public reporting portal, where citizens can submit reports of suspected misconduct under the Code. These reports will be treated confidentially and investigated fairly, he said.

“I invite the citizens of Ghana to play a role in monitoring compliance with this Code,” Mr Mahama told the gathering.

He added that the Code of Conduct forms part of his “120-day social contract with the people of Ghana” and is aimed at restoring discipline, accountability and trust in government.

“What we launch today is more than a Code, it is a declaration of intent,” Mr Mahama said. “It is the foundation of a new ethos in public service, one that values ethics over expediency, duty over indulgence, and country over self.”

Mahama will not engage in retaliatory politics – Stan Dogbe assures protesters

Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stan Dogbe, has reaffirmed President Mahama’s commitment to peaceful and democratic governance, stating emphatically that the new administration will not engage in retaliatory politics.

Gov’t initiates moves to reverse public universities renamed by Akufo-Addo

0

A new bill is being prepared by the government to be introduced in Parliament, through which the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), along with several other public universities across the country, will have their names changed.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.

Established in 2021 to equip students with practical and technical competencies for the global employment market, CKT-UTAS has been confronted with various infrastructural challenges that have impeded its academic advancement.

The institution’s name has not been accepted by some stakeholders who have protested against it since its inception.

It was further indicated by the Minister that the proposed renaming is part of a wider policy review aimed at evaluating and possibly altering the names of public universities that were either established or renamed during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“Extensive consultations have been held with members of the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni bodies, student representatives, and civil society organisations. Consequently, it is likely that the name ‘C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences’ will be changed—potentially in line with the original founding vision,” Mr Iddrisu noted.

He added that a general bill is expected to be brought before Parliament, under which the renaming of various public universities established or renamed under former President Akufo-Addo’s tenure will be considered.

It was clarified by the Minister that the move is not intended to diminish the contributions of individuals whom these institutions were named after. “This is not to suggest that such individuals are unworthy of recognition; rather, the renaming is being proposed in order to ensure alignment with the founding principles and historical identities of these institutions,” he explained.

The formalisation of the renaming process is expected to be undertaken through the tabling of a bill to be laid in Parliament.

President Mahama government won’t engage in retaliatory politics – Stan Dogbe to protestors

Stanislav Xoese Dogbe is the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations Stanislav Xoese Dogbe is the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations

The Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, has reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, strengthening democratic principles, and fostering a style of governance that welcomes constructive criticism.

While receiving the petition from political parties demonstrating against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5, 2025, Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe emphasised that President Mahama does not subscribe to the culture of retaliatory politics often witnessed under previous administrations.

Making his point clear, Stan Dogbe criticised the previous administration for engaging in acts of retaliatory politics, highlighting such practices as detrimental to democratic governance.

“Let me say that we are happy that your process started this morning and has ended very peacefully. That in itself is a very strong message about the democracy that President Mahama wants to instill in our dear country.

“If it were the case like this over the past eight years, I’m sure that the retaliatory politics that you talk about wouldn’t have been the case. You referencing retaliatory politics is an admission that the eight years of president Akufo-Addo and Bawumia were not the best. You can be assured however, that President Mahama as every Ghanaian knows, is not that politician. President Mahama does not believe in retaliatory politics,” he said.

He, however, assured the demonstrators that such practices will not be tolerated under the current administration, emphasising that President Mahama’s government is committed to respecting the views of its critics and political opponents, and upholding the principles of inclusive and democratic governance.

“We will work together with you and all the political parties and your petition will be giving the due response,” he added.

The demonstration, organised by political parties and led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the banner #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, marched from the Supreme Court to the Jubilee House, where they presented a petition to the president.

ECG installs mobile transformer in Tseaddo to meet growing power demand

0

In response to rising electricity demand in Tseaddo and surrounding areas, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Sub-Transmission Accra, has begun installing a mobile transformer to enhance power supply and improve overall system reliability.

The mobile unit, rated at 20/26 MVA and operating at 33/11 kV, was transported to Tseaddo at 2:00 AM today for installation.

It will temporarily support part of the load currently served by the La Primary Substation. The project is fully funded by ECG.

Communities expected to benefit include Tseaddo, La, Teshie, and nearby areas. This initiative is part of ECG’s broader strategy to improve power quality, boost operational efficiency, and support socio-economic development in these communities.

Although the mobile transformer is a temporary measure, it plays a critical role in ensuring continuous power supply until the permanent upgrade of the La Primary Substation is completed.

Ghanaian actress Sandra Ababio has revealed her desire to get married by December 2025, although she admits she has not yet found a suitable partner.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Ucook’ with Empress Gifty on May 4, 2025, Sandra opened up on her current relationship status, stating that she is available for marriage.

“I’m not married yet. If I were, I would have told you I was getting married. I don’t have any man in the U.S, I don’t want any trouble. I’m in Ghana, so I can’t have a man outside the country. If I’m to have a partner, he has to be in Ghana,” she stated.

Sandra explained that although she enjoys travelling, it’s purely for the purpose of gaining fresh ideas to bring back home.

“For now, I’m all alone, so if anyone wants to marry me, I’m available. I’ve broken up with the one I was with. I can date you today and break up with you the next day. I’m a bit difficult,” she added.

She further admitted she feels apprehensive about marriage due to its demands and challenges.

“I wish to marry in December but I haven’t found anyone yet. I’m a bit scared of marriage. The problems that come with it are too much, the instructions and responsibilities are overwhelming.”

Aside from her personal life, Sandra also shared updates on her latest business venture.

She said she now runs a real estate company called SA Properties which specialises in helping foreigners acquire land and build homes in Ghana.

“I own SA Properties. We deal in land sales, housing and building properties, especially for foreigners who struggle to find legitimate deals. Many people get scammed trying to acquire land but now estate agencies like ours make it easier. We offer installment plans and once the house is ready, clients can come to Ghana to inspect their properties. It’s very simple and we’re legit,” she expounded.

Vicky Bright slams political hypocrisy, calls for consistent application of rule of law

0

Victoria Bright, Former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor Victoria Bright, Former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor

A former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, Vicky Bright, has criticised the current political climate, suggesting hypocrisy and duplicity among some political figures.

She argued that the rule of law should be upheld consistently, regardless of which party is in power.

“The rule of law does not bend based on which party holds power,” she indicated during an interview on JoyNews AM Show on May 5, 2025.

According to Vicky, Ghana’s democracy is being undermined by selective outrage and partisan responses to issues of national importance.

“Authenticity and consistency should guide our political actions,” she stated.

She added that the selective approach to justice and governance not only weakens public trust in institutions, but also erodes the foundations of Ghana’s democracy.

“This hypocrisy and duplicity undermines the very foundations of our democracy. We’ve seen this before — selective outrage does not build a better Ghana,” Vicky emphasised.

Vicky Bright also stated that during the tenure of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, similar actions to those currently being criticised were met with silence by some political figures and commentators.

“When Nana Addo did similar things, many chose silence. Today, those same voices cry foul. This is a troubling trend of double standards,” she added.

I got pregnant for a sick man I was caring for, I don’t know what to do

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

There’s a disabled man who lives next door to us in the same fenced compound. He uses a wheelchair, cannot speak, and has limited mobility, but he understands what’s happening around him and communicates through gestures. He lives with his only brother and the brother’s wife.

I’ve come to learn that he was born with this condition. He used to live with their parents, but after they passed away, his care became the responsibility of his brother.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that his brother’s wife often mistreats him, especially when her husband is not around. Although the man is fragile and unable to speak, he deserves compassion and proper care. Instead, she pushes him outside and leaves him in the hot sun for hours at a time. When I asked why, she claimed he had urinated on himself and needed to air out to dry.

I felt deeply sorry for him and raised concerns, but ever since then, she has stopped speaking to me. I’ve found myself at a loss about how to bring this to his brother’s attention. When the brother is home, his wife pretends to care for the man lovingly, hiding her true behavior.

I’ve seen this poor man left outside with no food or water, tears silently rolling down his cheeks. It breaks my heart, but I don’t know the right way to intervene.

One day, after I confronted her again about the way she was treating him, she snapped and said that if I was so concerned, I should take him to my place and bring him back before her husband returned, because she was tired of looking after him. Out of frustration and sympathy, I took the man into my home.

I bathed him, fed him, and made sure he was comfortable. I did that for a few days, then I started noticing how huge his manhood was. I started taking interest in it, then I realised that if I touched it seductively, it rises.

I’m sorry to say this but the man become more like my sex toy ever since. I go for him daily. Though I take good care of him, I also sleep with him. I think he like it because he’s always eager to be at my place. I’m currently pregnant for him, I can’t go and tell them that their sick relative is responsible.

I’m also 35 so I don’t want to abort it. I keep asking myself, what if I deliver a child like him. I’m getting scared. I like the man’s manhood though I can’t and won’t marry someone like him or have a child like him.

Should I tell the man’s brother about it? Or should I abort the pregnancy? Honestly this wasn’t intentional, I was just curious and wanted to have fun. I feel sorry for myself for being single sometimes.

The man’s brother is rich and they live in a mansion. I’m just perching in a small house behind theirs.

If I should tell him I’m pregnant for his sick brother, do you think he’ll compensate me financially? I need help with what to do.

President Mahama deserves commendation for appointing non-partisan SC judges

National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye

The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for nominating seven new Justices to the Supreme Court.

Vanderpuye described the president’s nominations as non-partisan and credible, highlighting Mahama’s commitment to judicial excellence.

Under Article 143(2) of the 1992 Constitution, President Mahama has nominated seven justices from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court, pending approval by Parliament.

During an interview on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, Vanderpuye commended the president for selecting individuals without any public records of partisan bias or political affiliations.

“No one can stand anywhere and say that these people have in one way or the other appeared in a political color, appeared on any political platform. These are the people when you nominate or propose, it becomes acceptable to all. And I think that is the way we have to build our judicial system,” he stated.

Vanderpuye pointed out that perceptions of political bias in the judiciary have contributed to a decline in public confidence, as evidenced by the Afrobarometer Report.

He added that the recent nominations are a deliberate effort to address this issue.

“We needed to sanitise the system. And that is why I expect that we’ll have some commendations for President Mahama for being able to choose these people, who other people will not have any adverse findings of any perception about, and rather have confidence that these people, when they go to the Supreme Court, will be able to advance the course of justice,” he asserted.

This development has sparked discussions about the importance of merit-based appointments to the judiciary.

The nominations are now awaiting parliamentary approval and vetting.

Ghana tops Fitch Solutions list in NPLs, banking sector labeled as fragile

0

UK-based rating firm Fitch Solutions UK-based rating firm Fitch Solutions

UK-based rating firm Fitch Solutions has disclosed that Ghana’s banking sector is the most vulnerable among the top ten Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, with a high Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio of 21.8% and a relatively weak Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 14.05%.

According to Fitch Solutions’ latest report titled “US Tariffs Increase Risks for SSA Banks”, Ghana tops the list in NPLs and ranks third-lowest in CAR, underscoring the fragility of its banking sector.

The rating agency attributed the sector’s weakened fundamentals to the fallout from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and a persistently high interest rate environment.

Despite these challenges, Fitch noted that banks across the SSA region are generally better positioned to weather upcoming headwinds, supported by robust capital buffers and relatively stable asset quality in most markets.

“We anticipate improvements in most sectors’ capital, driven by regulatory enhancements in markets such as Nigeria and Kenya, alongside improving economic conditions in most markets,” the report stated.

Fitch expects interest rates across most SSA countries to decline in 2025, a development it believes will support improvements in loan quality.

Moreover, it noted that the exceptionally high profits banks have recorded in recent years, largely driven by aggressive interest rate hikes, will provide a financial cushion for institutions in the coming year.

Ghana gear up for Senegal clash tonight

0

Players of the Ghana U-20 team Players of the Ghana U-20 team

Ghana’s Black Satellites face a stern test on Monday, May 5, 2025, as they take on defending champions Senegal in a crucial Group B clash at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The match will be held at the New Suez Stadium.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6 PM local time, with both teams seeking their first win of the tournament after identical starts.

Ghana was held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match, while Senegal also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with the Central African Republic.

Despite failing to secure all three points, Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei is expected to stick with much of the same line-up.

However, CD Lugo midfielder Jerry Afriyie could return to the starting XI after making a significant impact off the bench in the game against DR Congo.

Abdul Sulemana, who earned the Man of the Match award in that game, is set to retain his place in midfield.

In goal, Gidios Aseako is expected to continue, supported by a back four comprising Andrews Adjabeng, McCarthy Ofori, Aaron Essel in central defence, and Dacosta Antwi at left-back.

Musibau Aziz, who scored Ghana’s goal in the opener, will once again lead the line following an impressive performance.

Senegal, meanwhile, is likely to name an unchanged side, with Mouhamed Sissokho in goal.

Cheikh Thiam, who scored in their opening game, is expected to anchor the midfield, while Ibrahim Dieng, despite not scoring, should continue to lead the line for the defending champions.

This encounter will mark only the second-ever meeting between the two sides at the U-20 AFCON.

Their first meeting came in 2019, when Senegal won 2-0.  However, Ghana avenged that defeat with a 1-0 victory over the Young Lions of Teranga in the semi-finals of the 2023 African Games, a tournament Ghana hosted and won.

With regional pride and tournament momentum on the line, this match promises to be a defining moment in Group B.  A win for Ghana would seal qualification to the knockout stages and send a strong message about their title ambitions, while Senegal will be desperate to avoid falling behind in their title defence.

All 133 cardinal electors arrive in Rome ahead of May 7 conclave

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, has announced and confirmed that all 133 Cardinal electors have arrived in Rome ahead of the papal conclave set to begin on May 7, 2025.

This was announced during a briefing on May 5, 2025.

According to the Vatican News, Bruni stated that a total of 179 Cardinals, including the 133 electors eligible to vote, participated in the tenth General Congregation held earlier in the day.

He confirmed that preparations are well underway for the start of the conclave, which will take place in the Sistine Chapel.

“All 133 Cardinal electors are now present in Rome, and every effort is being made to ensure a smooth and prayerful transition into the conclave. The church stands united as it prepares to discern its next shepherd,” he indicated.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, informed the congregation that Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell had conducted a lottery on Saturday afternoon to assign rooms for the electors.

All Cardinal electors will be accommodated either at the Casa Santa Marta or the adjacent old Santa Marta residence.

Bruni said that Cardinals will be able to travel from their accommodations to the Sistine Chapel via a secured route, with the option to walk.

He emphasised that all necessary logistical and security arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth and solemn transition into the conclave.

During Monday’s congregation, 26 interventions were made, addressing a wide range of issues.

Topics included canon law, the role of the Vatican City State, the Church’s missionary identity, and its social mission through Caritas.

Participants also reflected on recent history, recalling the spiritual significance of prayer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discussion also turned to hopes for the next pope. Several Cardinals voiced the desire for a shepherd close to the people, capable of fostering unity in a world facing fragmentation, war, and ecological crisis.

Other issues raised included the role of women in the Church, the importance of family and vocations, and the foundational teachings of the Second Vatican Council, particularly Dei Verbum.

“There is a deep sense of responsibility and hope among the Cardinals. Many are praying for a pope who will be close to the people, a unifying figure in a divided world,” he added.

Bruni noted that while journalists will not be permitted inside the Sistine Chapel due to security restrictions enforced by the Vatican Gendarmerie, official images of the prepared interior will be made available to the press.

Cardinals are expected to begin checking into their assigned rooms as early as Tuesday morning, marking the final phase of preparation before the conclave commences.

Government is ‘clueless’ about content creation

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, has taken to social media to call out the government and the creative arts industry for what he describes as a lack of understanding and appreciation for the work of content creators.

In a post shared on his X page, Shatta Wale expressed frustration at the neglect content creators face from the very institutions meant to support the arts.

“I don’t think the creative arts industry in Ghana and even Ghana and Ghana government truly understands who content creators are,” he wrote.

According to the On God hitmaker, content creation is not some random hustle rather it’s a full-time job, a business, and for many, a lifeline.

He painted a picture of creators who work tirelessly behind the scenes, often with little to no support.

“These individuals have chosen this path, sacrificing their time, investing in equipment, building teams, and creating platforms from scratch. It’s not just a hustle; it’s a serious business,” he stated.

The “dancehall king” went further to explain the connection between content creation and the broader entertainment ecosystem, emphasising that the two cannot be separated.

“We need to understand that entertainment and content creation go hand in hand, and with the right support, these platforms can grow and contribute massively to the industry,” he explained.

Shatta Wale also had words for those who downplay the effort it takes to build a career online.

He took aim at the common stereotype that YouTubers and digital creators are simply “making money from YouTube” as if it happens overnight without skill, strategy, or consistency.

“Please don’t say they’re ‘making money from YouTube’ like it’s some overnight success. The education and discipline required to build on YouTube is far deeper than what you’ve been told. It’s not easy, my guy,” he stated.

Shatta Wale further revealed plans to spotlight and uplift content creators through personal interviews.

“That’s why I’m starting interviews with these creators, #Headless, #Savageroom, #Codemicky, #SammyFlexTV, #ZionFelix, and many others, not because of what I’ll gain, but because I believe in helping those who are building something real for Ghana,” he concluded.

“On 18th of February 2025, I set a deadline of 31st March for all appointees who are taking office or being nominated at the time to declare assets. An update provided by the Auditor General to my office indicates that some of you failed to meet that deadline.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s top five Liverpool moments

0

The news that Liverpool fans all dreaded was announced on Monday, as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s his move from his boyhood club after spending 20 years at Anfield.

Whilst there has been no official confirmation on his next, journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news of his move to Real Madrid including his famous line “here we go”.

The BBC later broke the news that Madrid were in talks to finalise the deal.

Whilst there is still time for Alexander-Arnold to perform a U-turn, it appears that the right-back is going to be on the move to Madrid this summer.

This move has angered a lot of Liverpool fans, with a local lad allowing their contract to run down and move on a free transfer.

There is bound to be a lot of hurt, but it would be remiss to not look back over his time at the club and all the success he has had.

In 352 appearances across all competitions, he has recorded 23 goals and 92 assists. He also has the record for the most assists for a defender in the history of the Premier League, with 64 at time of writing.

Since making his first team debut for the club, Alexander-Arnold has won all there is to win with a Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups and two Premier League titles sending his trohohy count to eight with the Merseyside side.

3Sports take a look at Alexander-Arnold’s top five moments in a Liverpool shirt.

1. Trent Arnold silencing the Etihad Satdium

Liver pool footballer Trent Alexander-Alnord silenced the Etihad Stadium to earn a point in the 1-1 heavyweight clash between Manchester City and Liverpool FC yesterday.

Match day 13 of the English Premier League held significant importance for the defending champions of the league, Manchester City as they sought to solidify their first-place position in this year’s edition of the English Premier League and better their head-to-head records against the Merseyside giants.

The defending champions started the match on the front foot, pressurizing their opponents and dominating the game in terms of possession and chance creation action.

Their efforts eventually paid off as they were rewarded with a goal in the 27th minute of the game from their main marksman, Erling Haaland.
After the recess, Manchester City started from where they left off with the hopes of doubling their lead, but their aspirations were shattered as they were punished by a brilliant Trent Alexander Arnold strike to level the game.

The hardwork paid off in the 80th minute when Mohammed Salah pulled the ball back to Arnold on the edge of the box, with the latter beating Ederson with a low fine strike into the bottom left hand corner of the net to ensure parity.

2. His Premier League titles with Liverpool.(2019/20 and 2024/25)

Liverpool had last won the Premier League in 1990 and a year after their historic storm in Europe, the Merseyside giant won their first EPL title since 1990 after clinching 99 points. In the season, the fullback was instrumental for the Reds, scoring four goals and assisting 13 times.

In the 2024/25 season, his last with his boyhood club, the Englishman was pivotal for the six-time Champions League winners as they won their record-equaling 20th Premier League title, putting them level with bitter rivals Manchester United. Despite contractual issues, the seasoned fullback delivered an all-around performance throughout the season, scoring three goals and assisting nine times.

3. Winning Liverpool’s sixth champions league

Trent Alexander-Arnold played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2018/19 Champions League campaign, contributing significantly in both defense and attack. He recorded  four assists in 11 games.

One of his most memorable moments came in the semifinal against Barcelona, where his quick-thinking corner kick helped spark a remarkable comeback.

After Barcelona’s 3-0 win in the first leg, Liverpool staged an incredible turnaround at Anfield, ultimately overturning the deficit to advance to the final.

4. His Anfield performance against Barcelona in the UCL semis

Liverpool went into the second leg of their 2018/19 Champions League final against Barcelona 3-0 down.

This is after their heavy defeat in the Nou Camp. With Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino ruled out of the game, many felt that the tie was over, despite the scoreline in Spain not doing the team justice.

However, Liverpool unleased the spirit of Istanbul at Anfield, with a Divock Origi goal and a Georginio Wijnaldum double bringing the tie level. Their work was not done here.

Liverpool won a corner in the 79th minute and Alexander-Arnold caught Barcelona asleep.

His corner found he foot of the Belgian to the complete disbelief of the Catalan side. Klopp’s side manage to hold on and advance to the final.

Against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid of all places, Liverpool won the game 2-0 and Alexander-Arnold was a European champion.

Looking back, given the quality of the Barcelona team and the home atmosphere, the semi final second leg felt more like the final and his quick thinking will always be remembered.

5. Introduction himself in Germany

Prior to the start of the 2017/18 season, Nathaniel Clyne was expected to start for Liverpool in the right back spot. Alexander-Arnold was an afterthought.

However, injury to Clyne meant that Alexander-Arnold was given the chance to start in a Champions League qualifier against 1899 Hoffenheim in Germany. Liverpool were awarded a free kick in the 35th minute. Stood centrally, the youngster stepped up and hit a sublime effort into the back of the net, curling overthe wall and into the bottom right corner.

Much to the misfortune of Clyne, Alexander-Arnold did not look back. This was a game that firmly put his name on the footballing map.

As Alexander-Arnold bids farewell to Liverpool, fans will cherish the memories of his incredible journey with the Reds.

His dedication, skill, and passion will forever be etched in the annals of Liverpool’s history.

While his departure may be bittersweet, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Reds.

Ghana Health Service reshuffles senior staff in major structural overhaul

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reshuffled and reassigned over a dozen key officials in a move the new Director-General says was aimed at strengthening health delivery across the country.

In a letter communicating the changes expected to take effect from May 19, 2025, the Acting Director-General, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, said the restructuring forms part of ongoing institutional reforms intended to boost operational efficiency and improve public health outcomes.

The changes affect senior staff within regional health directorates, national health programmes, and the GHS headquarters.

Regions impacted include Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Central, and Ahafo.

At the heart of the reshuffle is a realignment of leadership within critical national programmes.

Those in malaria, HIV/AIDS, immunisation, and non-communicable diseases have been reassigned in a rotation strategy that is seeing experienced officers taking on new responsibilities across both national and regional levels.

Among those redeployed is Dr Hilarius A.K. Abiwu, who is leaving his role as Deputy Director of Public Health in the Northern Region to become acting Programme Manager for the National Malaria Elimination Programme at the GHS headquarters.

Similarly, Dr Emmanuel A. A. Teviu, previously based in the Ashanti Region, assumes the role of Acting Programme Manager for the National AIDS Control Programme.

Dr Selorm Kutsoati, who served as District Director for La Nkwantanang-Madina in Greater Accra, has been appointed Acting Programme Manager for the Expanded Programme on Immunisation.

Meanwhile, Dr Wallace Odiko-Ollennu, formerly the Deputy Chief Dental Officer, will now lead the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit in an acting capacity.

As part of the broader reshuffle, current Programme Manager for the AIDS Control Programme, Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo, has been posted to the Northern Region as Acting Deputy Director of Public Health.

Other key changes include the reassignment of Dr Efua Commeh from the NCDs unit to serve as Acting District Director for La Nkwantanang-Madina, and Dr Andrew Ayim’s redeployment from GHS headquarters to Ahafo Region as Deputy Director of Public Health.

Dr Keziah Maim also takes up a new post as Acting Deputy Director of Public Health.

The GHS has instructed all regional and divisional directors to facilitate smooth transitions, emphasising that handovers must not disrupt ongoing services.

Officers are required to notify the headquarters upon assuming their new roles.
