New Oil discoveries happened under Akufo-Addo, not Mahama – Minority

0

The Minority in Parliament has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly claiming credit for recent oil discoveries that, according to them, were made under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the Minority caucus, Collins Adomako-Mensah, Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, asserted that the Akoma and Eban-1X oil discoveries were made in 2019 and 2021, respectively—both during former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

He explained that ENI Ghana, operator of the Cape Three Points (CTP) Block 4, issued formal notices of discovery to the then Ministry of Energy, the Petroleum Commission, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in accordance with the petroleum agreement.

“ENI, as required by the CTP Block 4 Petroleum Agreement, formerly issued two separate notices of discovery to the then Ministry of Energy, the Petroleum Commission and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation. These discoveries were also announced or published by sections of the Ghanaian media,” he said.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah expressed concern over what he described as a deliberate effort by the current government to claim credit for discoveries it had no role in.

“The Minority wonders how the Mahama administration, which had nothing to do with the drilling of the Akoma and Eban exploration wells as well as approval of the appraisal programme of the two discoveries, will all of a sudden claim that the results of an Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration-approved appraisal programme that are a result of commerciality are a credit to it.”

He emphasized that under Ghana’s petroleum regime, the responsibility of reporting the outcomes of approved appraisal programmes lies with the contractor or operator—not the government.

“In Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry, it is a contract or operator that has a duty of informing the state of the outcome of any approved appraisal programme. That is what ENI did recently.”

He further accused the Mahama-led administration of using the announcement for political gain.

“The Mahama administration, for self-serving purposes, has sought to covet this normal reporting to a funfair whose cause is attributable to it, even though it is barely seven months in office,” he added.

Ghana to Digitise 16,000 Government Services on Ghana.gov Platform

0

The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), is currently re-engineering the platform to make government services more accessible and convenient for citizens and businesses alike.

In a significant push to modernize public service delivery, Ghana is set to expand its Ghana.gov platform dramatically, with 16,000 government services slated for digital integration. This ambitious undertaking was announced by Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, during a recent press briefing.

The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) , is currently re-engineering the platform to make government services more accessible and convenient for citizens and businesses alike. The goal is to enhance transparency and reliability in accessing public services.

Currently, the Ghana.gov portal facilitates around 1,500 to 2,000 services, including payments, permits, registrations, and licenses, serving as a central digital hub. The redesigned version, expected to launch in the fourth quarter after a public tender, promises significantly faster access, full Ghana Card integration, and an intuitive, streamlined interface. This redesign aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and improve service delivery turnaround times.

Beyond digital services, Minister George also addressed critical issues concerning digital content and consumer rights. He condemned the proliferation of sexually explicit material on platforms like TikTok, emphasizing its unacceptability and contravention of Ghanaian cultural values. He disclosed that the government had engaged TikTok’s West Africa team to advocate for in-country content moderation by locally trained teams. Furthermore, a local content governance framework was proposed, with the Cybersecurity Authority (CSA) tasked to monitor and remove offensive content, particularly to safeguard minors.

In a related development, assurance was given to the public regarding DStv subscription prices, with a commitment to securing a reduction. A crucial meeting was scheduled with MultiChoice Ghana and their South African leadership to discuss pricing structures that are more responsive to Ghana’s economic conditions and its citizens’ financial realities.

Regarding radio stations, the Minister provided an update on ongoing enforcement actions against non-compliant broadcasters. Out of 62 stations previously shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA), only 18 have so far initiated steps to rectify their violations. These stations have less than ten days remaining in a 30-day moratorium granted by the President as a gesture of leniency for infractions such as license non-renewal, lack of tax clearance, and non-compliance with standards. The Minister affirmed that the enforcement is not politically motivated but essential for sanitizing the broadcasting sector. The 18 stations demonstrating good faith will receive an additional 30-day extension to achieve full compliance, though a strict warning was issued against those who fail to act. The media was urged to adhere to legal obligations, with a reminder of the responsibilities that accompany their influence.

Background and Data Collection

The GTA has since 2019, consistently published the Annual Tourism Report.

Using 2019 as the baseline year, the 2024 report documents the sector’s progress in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Primary data were collected through interviews with inbound tourists at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), and surveys conducted at selected tourism enterprises in Accra and Takoradi during the “December in Gh” (DiGH) festivities.

The GTA disclosed that secondary data were generously provided by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), whose ongoing cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.

Furthermore, data on domestic tourism were gathered in collaboration with regional directors and site managers across the country’s tourist attractions, as well as occupancy data from selected hospitality establishments.

According to the 2024, report, the outlook for the coming years is marked by cautious optimism, grounded in indicators of sector-wide stability. The report is informed by both primary and secondary data sources.

Destination of International Travelers

The 2024 Tourism Report showed that American Nationals topped the list of visitors.

Out of the 1.2 million international visitors, 137,000 came from America. 111,000 were from Nigeria. The United Kingdom came in third with 52,000.

The report showed that it has been the trend in the top three.

The report established that, 22.4 percent of the visitors were in Ghana last year for business purposes.

Visiting family and friends accounted for about 22.2 percent of the total visit for vacation purposes. Conference came up as the 4th reason offered by visitors.

Again 1.1 million of the visitors used the Kotoka International Airport for their visits.

77,000 used the Aflao boarder and the remaining, came through Elubu which is in the third place with 53,000 visitors.

Two reported dead in Kenya protests as central Nairobi sealed off

0

Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Nairobi Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Nairobi

Two people have reportedly died of gunshot wounds after police opened fire during protests in Kenya, the latest in a wave of anti-government rallies that began last year.

Dr Aron Sikuku, a medic at Eagle Nursing Home in Kangemi on the outskirts of Nairobi, told the BBC that two bodies had been taken to the facility and had died from gunshot wounds. He said hundreds of protesters had gathered outside his hospital demanding to take away the bodies.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation of the deaths.

The demonstrations mark the 35th anniversary of the historic Saba Saba (7 July 1990) protests that launched Kenya’s push for multiparty democracy.

From early morning, security forces blocked all major roads into central Nairobi ahead of the protests. The city centre appeared deserted, with businesses shut and a heavy police presence on the streets.

Elsewhere in Nairobi, clashes broke out as demonstrators lit fires and attempted to breach police cordons. Officers responded with tear gas and water cannon.

The police fired tear gas to disperse people on Thika Road, as well as in Kitengela, a town on the outskirts of the capital. In Kamukunji, near the venue where the original Saba Saba protests were held, police battled groups of protesters who lit fires on the streets.

The rest of the country was largely quiet, although some clashes were reported.

Earlier, hundreds of early-morning commuters and overnight travellers were stranded at checkpoints, some more than 10km (six miles) from the city centre, with only a few vehicles allowed through.

Within the city, roads leading to key government sites – including the president’s official residence, State House, and the Kenyan parliament – were barricaded with razor wire.

Some schools advised students to stay at home.

By mid-morning on Monday, hundreds of overnight passengers remained stranded outside the city centre, with major roads still closed.

Some long-distance buses were parked in Kabete, about 13km from the city centre, with many passengers who could not afford to pay extra money for motorcycle rides to their destinations remaining there.

Humphrey Gumbishi, a bus driver, said they had started their journey on Sunday evening only to find the police roadblock in the morning.

“We started travelling at 8:30 pm last night… We want the government to engage in a dialogue with Gen Zs so all this can come to an end,” he told the BBC

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the police said it was their constitutional duty to protect lives and property while maintaining public order.

Monday’s demonstrations were organised primarily by the so-called Gen-Z young people, demanding good governance, greater accountability, and justice for victims of police brutality, continuing the wave of anti-government protests since last year.

On 25 June, at least 19 people were killed and thousands of businesses looted and destroyed in a day of nationwide protests that were being held in honour of those killed in last year’s anti-tax protests.

Recent demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of infiltration by “goons”, who are accused of looting and attacking protesters. Civil society groups allege collusion between these groups and the police – accusations the police have strongly denied.

On Sunday, an armed gang attacked the headquarters of a human rights NGO in Nairobi. The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) had been hosting a press conference organised by women calling for an end to state violence ahead of Monday’s protests.

The KHRC spokesman, Ernest Cornel, said that the gang was made up of at least 25 people on motorbikes chanting: “There will be no protest today”.

“They were carrying stones, they were carrying clubs… they stole laptops, they stole a phone and they also took some valuables from journalists who were there,” he told the BBC Newsday programme.

The original Saba Saba protests were a key moment that helped usher in multiparty democracy in Kenya after years of one-party rule.

The response by the then government under President Daniel arap Moi was brutal. Many protesters were arrested, while at least 20 people were reportedly killed.

Since then, Saba Saba has come to symbolise civic resistance and the fight for democratic freedom in Kenya.

Shatta Wale provided the performance “pro bono in honour of the President and the Ghanaian people,” according to a Ministry statement, and accepted full responsibility for expenses linked to dancers, costumes, rehearsals, and stage production.

SOS Ghana mentors JHS graduates on career and life skills

0

SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana has ended a five-day Life Skills and Career Orientation Boot Camp designed to help Junior High School (JHS) graduates prepare for life after school with practical knowledge and guidance for their future paths.

The camp took place from June 30 to July 4, 2025, at the organisation’s programme site in Tema. It brought together 84 participants from SOS locations in Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi, and Tamale, as well as young people from surrounding communities.

Held under the theme *“Helping young people develop the relevant skills for their career path,”* the camp introduced participants to a wide range of topics intended to help them build confidence and prepare for both academic and vocational options.

Participants engaged in sessions on self-awareness, decision-making, time management, financial planning, leadership, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility. Other sessions included discussions on sexual and reproductive health, drug abuse, gender stereotypes, and how to identify and report abuse.

sos2

Speaking during the opening session, Mr Godknows Kporha, Youth Development Advisor at SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, said the programme was intended to support young people in making informed decisions about their lives.

“This boot camp is not just about career orientation,” Mr Kporha said. “It’s about helping young people see themselves as agents of change in their communities through personal growth, resilience, and purposeful choices.”

The National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, Mr Alexander Mar Kekula, advised the participants to be purposeful in their actions and remain focused on their goals.

“Be intentional about your choices. Seek guidance, ask questions, and remain focused,” Mr Kekula told the group. He urged them to take charge of their future by making deliberate and thoughtful decisions.

sos3

During the entrepreneurship session, participants worked in teams to develop business ideas, which they presented to their peers and facilitators.

The activity was meant to encourage practical thinking and peer learning. In another group session on gender equality, the young people were encouraged to question traditional roles and discuss ways to promote fairness within their communities.

One of the sessions on child safeguarding provided practical information on how to protect oneself and others from abuse. Participants were taken through how to recognise harmful behaviour, seek help, and understand personal boundaries and consent.

sos4

The boot camp ended with an educational tour of the Tema Harbour. Many of the participants were visiting the port for the first time and had the opportunity to observe port operations and learn about career prospects in logistics, shipping, and international trade.

SOS Children’s Villages Ghana said the programme is part of its broader effort to support young people with guidance and tools that can help them make sound choices for their lives and their communities.

The organisation added that it will continue to roll out similar initiatives across its locations to promote the growth and development of Ghanaian youth.

Trump threatens extra 10% tariff on nations siding with BRICS

0

Trump has long criticised Brics, an organisation whose members include China, Russia and India Trump has long criticised Brics, an organisation whose members include China, Russia and India

US President Donald Trump has warned that countries which side with the policies of the Brics alliance that go against US interests will be hit with an extra 10% tariff.

“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump wrote on social media.

Trump has long criticised Brics, an organisation whose members include China, Russia and India.

The US had set a 9 July deadline for countries to agree a trade deal, but US officials now say tariffs will begin on 1 August. Trump said he would send letters to countries telling them what the tariff rate will be if an agreement is not reached.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expected “a busy couple of days”.

“We’ve had a lot of people change their tune in terms of negotiations. So my mailbox was full last night with a lot of new offers, a lot of new proposals,” he told CNBC.

So far, the US has only struck trade agreements with the UK and Vietnam, as well as a partial deal with China.

Although, Britain and America have still not reached a deal over taxes for UK steel imported by the US.

Since taking office this year, Trump has announced a series of import tariffs on goods from other countries, arguing they will boost American manufacturing and protect jobs.

In April, on what he called “Liberation Day”, he announced a wave of new taxes on goods from countries around the world – with some as high as 50% – although he quickly suspended his most aggressive plans to allow for three months of talks up until 9 July.

During this period, the US implemented a 10% tariff on goods entering the States from most of its international trading partners.

The European Union (EU) is reportedly in talks to keep a provisional 10% tax in place for most goods shipped to the US beyond the deadline.

It is also in discussions about reducing a 25% tariff on EU cars and parts and a 50% tax on steel and aluminium sales to the US.

On Monday, a spokesperson said that the European Commission’s president Ursula von der Leyen had a “good exchange” with Trump. Just a few weeks ago, the US president had threatened the EU with a 50% tax unless it reached an agreement.

Asked whether the taxes would change on 9 July or 1 August, Trump said at the weekend: “They’re going to be tariffs, the tariffs are going to be tariffs.”

He added that between 10 and 15 letters would be sent to countries on Monday advising them on what their new tariff rate will be if they don’t agree a deal.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified that the taxes will come into force on 1 August.

Last week, Trump said Japan could face a “30% or 35%” tariff if the country failed to reach a deal with the US by Wednesday.

Last year, the list of Brics members expanded beyond the original group of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The countries in the bloc – which was designed to boost the nations’ international standing and challenge the US and western Europe – account for more than half of the world’s population.

The threat by Trump on Sunday to countries working with Brics nations emerged after members criticised US tariff policies as well as proposing reforms to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and how major currencies are valued.

Following a two-day meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brics finance ministers issued a statement criticising tariffs as a threat to the global economy, and bringing “uncertainty into international economic and trade activities”.

Andrew Wilson, deputy secretary general of the International Chambers of Commerce, said it would be challenging for countries to move away from doing business with China.

He told the BBC’s Today programme: “Shifting away from China…in a number of sectors is far more difficult to achieve in the world in practice.

“You look at the dominance China has in a number of sectors – EVs, batteries [and] particularly rare earths and magnets, there are no viable alternatives to China production.”

A deal with the UK to cut tariffs on UK cars and parts from 27.5% to 10% up to a quota of 100,000 vehicles. Taxes on aerospace goods have been cut to zero. In return, the UK has agreed to remove import taxes on US ethanol and beef. a deal with Vietnam whereby Vietnamese goods shipped to America will be taxed at 20% and US products exported to Vietnam will face no tariffs. Any goods “trans-shipped” through Vietnam by another country that are sold into the US will be taxed at 40%.

A partial deal whereby US taxes on some Chinese imports fell from 145% to 30% and China’s tariffs on some US goods were cut from 125% to 10%. China has also halted and scrapped other non-tariff countermeasures, such as the export of critical minerals to the US.

CSU Holds Prayer Service To Mark First National Thanksgiving Day

0

Rev. Anthony Boateng-Agyenim

The Christian Service University (CSU) held a prayer and thanksgiving service on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in observance of Ghana’s newly instituted National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

Although the official date falls on July 1 each year, CSU marked the occasion a day later with a spirited gathering that united students, staff, and faculty in heartfelt intercession for the nation.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving was recently declared by President John Dramani Mahama as an annual observance to encourage nationwide reflection and gratitude for God’s blessings — including the country’s enduring peace, democracy, and progress.

At CSU, the solemn service was led by the University Chaplain, Rev. Anthony Boateng-Agyenim, who based his sermon on 2 Timothy 4:1-6.

He urged the CSU community to acknowledge God’s hand in Ghana’s journey since the return to constitutional rule in 1992, and to commit to sustained prayer for the nation’s peace, development, and moral renewal.

Rev. Boateng-Agyenim emphasised that prayer must be more than ceremonial – it should be a way of life for believers. He highlighted key dimensions of national prayer: seeking God’s guidance, interceding for leaders and citizens, confessing societal wrongs, and offering genuine gratitude.

The service was filled with vibrant worship, as the congregation lifted their voices in praise and thanksgiving. Intercessory prayers were offered for national leaders, institutions, and the youth, while pressing issues such as illegal mining, corruption, and moral decay were confronted with passionate appeals for divine intervention.

The CSU community rededicated itself to the values of faith, responsibility, and patriotic service, pledging to be agents of transformation in their families, communities, and the broader Ghanaian society.

Ghana Grows movie preemiere ignites new thinking among youth in Ashaiman

0

Accra, July 7, GNA- The Ashaiman community came alive as hundreds of young people gathered for the premiere of three youth-led short films under the Ghana Grows Programme.

The event, a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and the Springboard Road Show Foundation, with creative direction from Meraki Arts Africa, utilised the power of storytelling to redefine how young Ghanaians perceive agriculture and agribusiness.

The films, written and produced by Meraki Arts, boldly challenges long-held stereotypes around agriculture and ATVET (Agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training), while spotlighting real-life stories of transformation and purpose.

Mrs Comfort Ocran, Executive Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, said, “This was more than a film premiere. It was a turning point, proof that stories can unlock confidence, reshape mindsets, and inspire a new generation to see agriculture and ATVET as creative, fulfilling, and dignified career options.”

Celebrated actor Adjetey Anann, who appeared in the series, praised the energy and insight the young filmmakers brought to the screen. “It’s more than entertainment, it’s about identity, dignity, and the future we’re building together,” he said.

The premiere drew participation from youth across Ashaiman and beyond, along with media houses, creative industry leaders, and key stakeholders.

Following the screenings, a lively panel discussion offered the cast and production team a platform to share their journey and reflections on storytelling as a tool for mindset change.

Ashaiman was chosen for its vibrant youth population and track record of community-led success stories. Its energy and engagement captured the very essence of Ghana Grows, to spark real change where it matters most.

Led by the Springboard Road Show Foundation and funded by the Mastercard Foundation, the Ghana Grows Programme continues to make strides nationwide by promoting agriculture and ATVET as modern, viable, and respected career paths for Ghana’s youth.

With support from creative and technical collaborators such as Meraki Arts Africa, Lyme Haus, and others, the programme remains committed to mindset shift, skills development, and youth empowerment.

NDC Spain Branch applauds Mahama’s government for economic gains, policy delivery

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Spain Branch of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lauded the Mahama-led administration for what it describes as effective economic management and the successful implementation of key campaign promises.

In a statement issued by the branch secretary, Hanson Dartey, the party expressed confidence in the government’s direction, citing tangible progress in both economic stability and social interventions.

Among the flagship initiatives earning praise is the government’s recently launched “No-Academic-Fee” policy introduced for the 2025 academic year.

The policy seeks to eliminate academic facility user fees for tertiary students, easing financial burdens and expanding access to higher education.

“This initiative is a bold step toward equitable education,” Dartey said. “It is helping many students who would otherwise be left behind due to financial constraints.”

The NDC Spain Branch also highlighted impressive economic achievements under the current administration, including:

$5 billion in revenue: The Ghana Gold Board has reportedly generated $5 billion in just six months, a development credited to improved management and strategic reforms.

Stabilization of the cedi: The influx of revenue has contributed to a more stable local currency, offering relief to businesses and consumers alike.

“These figures reflect prudent economic leadership and a renewed sense of direction in managing the country’s natural resources,” Mr. Dartey stated.

According to the branch, the Mahama government has so far fulfilled nearly 70% of its campaign pledges—a signal of its commitment to good governance and accountability.

Dartey commended the government’s efforts in addressing the pressing needs of Ghanaians and called on citizens to support the administration’s development agenda.

The commendation from the NDC Spain Branch adds to growing endorsements of the Mahama-led government’s performance. The branch believes that with the continued implementation of people-centred policies, Ghanaians will experience further improvements in both economic and social sectors.

Entertainment pundit Lawrence Asiamah, well-known as Bullgod, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the government to aid Thomas Partey in his rape case trial.

The player has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The offenses are reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, according to the United Kingdom (UK) Metropolitan Police.

The charges involve three women, with two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape in connection to a second woman, and one count of sexual assault linked to a third woman.

In response, Bullgod asserted that the Black Stars midfielder has played an immense role in the nation’s successes, especially in qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 qualification.

The artiste manager also indicated that, in light of his services to the nation, the GFA and the government should do their best to help him in any way possible to get him out of the predicament.

“At the moment, we pray that God will help him to redeem himself from the charges, and public support too. I also believe that the GFA or the Ghana government should support him in the best way possible in this situation, because this is a citizen who makes the nation proud on the international stage.

“It is not easy to face charges of this sort; I have been a victim before, so I understand what it means,” he said in Twi while speaking on the United Showbiz on April 5, 2025.

Bullgod further expressed skepticism about one of the charges leveled against the former Arsenal midfielder, saying it is not plausible for one lady to be raped three times without reporting it earlier.

“One of the girls who claimed Partey raped her thrice does not make sense to me. I would dismiss it first if I were his lawyer. This is because she should have reported it when it happened for the first time, so it makes the claim doubtful,” he added.

South Africa’s police minister accused of links to criminal gangs

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has dismissed the wild allegations Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has dismissed the wild allegations

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been accused of having ties to criminal gangs and of meddling in police investigations into politically motivated murders.

These explosive allegations were made by KwaZulu-Natal police boss Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi at a press briefing on Sunday.

He said Mr Mchunu was receiving financial support from an allegedly corrupt businessman to fund his “political endeavours”.

Mr Mchunu has since denied what he says are “wild allegations” while President Cyril Ramaphosa said they were of “grave national security concern” and “receiving the highest priority attention”.

Gen Mkhwanazi detailed a sequence of events he claims led to the “orchestrated” disbandment of a task force set up in 2018 to investigate the killing of politicians, mainly in KwaZulu-Natal.

Gen Mkhwanazi said the team’s investigations had uncovered links to high-profile individuals — including politicians, police officials, and businesspeople tied to a drug cartel syndicate – and this is why the team was disbanded.

When he dissolved the unit earlier this year, Mchunu said it was not adding value in the province, despite many cases remaining unsolved.

According to Gen Mkhwanazi, a total of 121 case files were allegedly removed from the unit on the minister’s instruction and without the authorisation of his boss, the national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

“These case dockets have, since March, been sitting at the head office ever since without any investigation work done on them. Five of these dockets already had instructions to [effect] arrests.”

The provincial police chief also alleged Mr Mchunu had ties to a controversial businessman who was “financially supporting” the minister’s political career.

Vusimuzi Matlala had a lucrative contract with the police before it was abruptly cancelled when he was arrested for attempted murder in May. Gen Mkhwanazi shared copies of text messages and a payment allegedly made by Mr Matlala to prove this.

Gen Masemola, on his part, said he would address these allegations later in the week when he announces the appointment of the temporary crime intelligence boss.

Criminal intelligence chief Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo was arrested over fraud and corruption allegations last month.

Gen Khumalo and the other six had been linked to an ongoing investigation into alleged abuse of intelligence funds and potentially unlawful appointments within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Heavy security at EOCO ahead of NPP protest over detention of Ex-Buffer Stock CEO

0

Security has been intensified at the premises of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) in Accra, with police erecting barricades ahead of a planned protest by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Minority caucus over the continued detention of former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Abdul-Wahab Hannan.

Mr. Hannan was arrested along with his wife on June 25 in connection with alleged financial crimes. While his wife has since been granted bail set at GH¢30 million, Mr. Hannan remains in custody despite reportedly meeting his GH¢60 million bail conditions.

On Thursday, July 3, a group of NPP supporters gathered at EOCO’s premises to demand his release. The protest is expected to escalate on Monday, July 7, as more party members, including NPP Members of Parliament and executives, plan to converge at EOCO in a mass action.

Speaking to Channel One TV’s Charles Owusu Kumi, NPP National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha confirmed the planned protest.

He noted that although Mr. Hannan’s legal team had previously advised against demonstrations, growing frustration among supporters had made a large-scale protest inevitable.

In anticipation of the demonstration, police on Monday morning were seen reinforcing security and mounting barricades to prevent protesters from gaining access to the EOCO premises.

Citi News’ Charles Owusu Kumi reported that Hannan’s family is currently at the EOCO premises.

The party maintains that Hannan’s continued detention despite satisfying his bail conditions is unjust and demands a response from the authorities.

Police condemn reckless use of firearms at public events

0

Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, has issued a stern warning against the reckless and unlawful use of firearms at public and cultural gatherings.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Superintendent Obeng condemned such behaviour, describing it as a serious threat to lives and public safety.

“At this moment, we would want to take the opportunity to strongly condemn the reckless and unlawful use of firearms at public and cultural events, which poses a grave risk to lives and public safety,” she said.

The police command also reminded the public that possession and discharge of firearms without lawful authority is a serious offence under the law.

Superintendent Obeng emphasised that anyone found violating these laws would face strict legal consequences.

“The command goes again to remind the public that possession and discharge of firearms without lawful authority is a serious offence and those who are found to be flouting the law will be dealt with accordingly,” she stated.

Her remarks follow the tragic death of Fatima, a second-year student at Bimbilla Senior High School, who was killed by a stray bullet during the annual Fire Festival in Bimbilla, Nanumba North Municipality, in the Northern Region.

The incident occurred as a crowd moved in procession from the regent’s palace to Wampu Dam, where festival rituals were expected to take place on July 6.

The caution comes ahead of a number of upcoming cultural events, including the Homowo festival by the Ga people in Accra, as authorities seek to ensure the safety and security of all participants.

Celebrations are usually accompanied by the firing of musketry loaded with gunpowder, but there is an increasing trend of the use of sophisticated guns and live ammunition.

The police urged the public to cooperate fully and report any illegal activity to help maintain peace during these celebrations.

Shatta Wale did not take a dime for President’s Cup event – Report

The report suggests Shatta Wale performed for free at 2025 President's Cup The report suggests Shatta Wale performed for free at 2025 President’s Cup

Reports have emerged that Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, did not receive any payment from the government for his performance at the 2025 President’s Cup held at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 6, 2025.

According to Joy Sports, the musician personally covered the full cost of his performance and production as a gesture to honour President John Dramani Mahama.

It has been reported that the Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, released a statement to clear up public concerns.

In the statement, the minister explained that no taxpayer’s money was used to pay Shatta Wale or cover any part of his performance.

“Shatta Wale covered the cost of his entire performance and production. The state did not pay him a dime. The sports minister released a statement to clarify that no taxpayer’s money was given to Shatta Wale. The performance was free, and he said that was his way of honouring President Mahama,” Joy Sports report.

Shatta Wale was one of the artistes that were billed to perform alongside other artistes such as Camidoh and Kweku Smoke during the President’s Cup on July 6, 2025.

Asante Kotoko won their ninth President’s Cup title after beating rivals Hearts of Oak 2:1.

Sustainability of ‘No Fees Stress’ policy must be assessed

0

The 'No Fees Stress' policy by President Mahama on July 4 in Koforidua The ‘No Fees Stress’ policy by President Mahama on July 4 in Koforidua

Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Gunu, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Associate Professor at the University for Development Studies (UDS), has raised critical concerns about the sustainability of the government’s newly launched ‘No Fees Stress’ policy for first-year tertiary students.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Monday, July 7, Dr Gunu questioned how the policy, though well-intentioned, would be sustained in the coming years and proposed a broader conversation on its practical implementation.

While welcoming the initiative, Dr Gunu stressed the need for clear, long-term funding plans to ensure the policy does not face implementation challenges after its initial rollout.

He said, “I think sustainability is another conversation that we need to start to see how the policy in the first place can be sustained for the first years. We also need to start the conversation about whether the students actually will need a refund or the fees must be absorbed for all first-year students so that there will not be a need to be stranded to look for money to pay for it to be reimbursed.”

Dr Gunu’s comments follow the launch of the No Fees Stress policy by President John Dramani Mahama in Koforidua on Friday, July 4, 2025.

The policy, aimed at removing financial barriers to tertiary education, will cover academic-related fees for all first-year students in public universities, colleges of education, technical universities, and nursing training institutions.

President Mahama, during the launch, underscored that the policy is not a handout but a constitutional responsibility to ensure access to education for all.

President Mahama highlighted that over 15,000 students have already had their academic fees cleared under the initiative.

The President also appealed to tertiary institutions to implement the programme with “transparency, compassion, and excellence,” and called on private sector actors and development partners to co-invest through scholarships, bursaries, and public-private financing models.

US$4 billion projection for 24-Hour Economy inadequate – Finance expert

0

The 24-Hour Economy logo was unveiled on July 2, 2025 The 24-Hour Economy logo was unveiled on July 2, 2025

The Head of Finance at Merban Capital, Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi, has averred that the projected US$4 billion cost for implementing the 24-Hour Economy policy is inadequate.

He questioned how the private sector and the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) would generate the required revenue to finance the project, which is the flagship programme of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Channel One’s The Big Issue programme, Kuagbedzi said; “The government said it will be committing $300 million as seed money for the initial rollout of the programme. The question we need to ask ourselves is how the private sector or the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund will raise this money.”

“Where are they going to raise this money? We must have a secure source of funding to make implementation easy. The issue is that anytime programmes or policies are rolled out in this country, we don’t have a dedicated source of funding for the programme,” he added.

Kuagbedzi opined that the government could leverage pension funds to support the policy.

According to him, assets under management by pension funds are projected to reach nearly GH¢100 billion by the end of 2025.

“One of the areas I think they can look at is the pension funds. The assets under management of pension funds by the close of the year [2025] are targeted to hit close to GH¢100 billion. I think they can leverage pension funds to get some funds to support the 24-hour policy,” he stated.

Meanwhile, during the launch of the policy, President John Dramani Mahama noted that while the government is the driving force behind the 24-Hour Economy, it will play a facilitative role to allow the private sector to lead its implementation.

He explained that any government funding would serve as catalytic seed capital, while additional financing would be sourced from commercial banks, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), and blended financing instruments.

This approach, he noted, is intended to unlock larger pools of capital while reducing the fiscal burden on the state.

The 24-Hour Economy Policy is projected to cost US$4 billion, with the government committing between US$300 million and US$400 million as seed capital to bridge viability gaps and attract private sector investment.

The programme is envisioned as a nationwide economic agenda, targeting the creation of 1.7 million quality jobs over four years.

Ken Agyapong leads NPP flagbearer race with broad grassroots support – Survey

0

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has taken an early lead in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries race slated for January 2026, securing 51.4% of delegate support, according to a new survey by civil society organisation, Sanity Africa.

The research, conducted between April and June 2025, gauged the voting intentions of delegates listed in the NPP’s current voter album. Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, trails with 42.2%, while Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum recorded 3.1% and 3.0% respectively.

Sanity Africa noted that this study forms the first phase of a three-part project to monitor delegate preferences leading into the NPP’s presidential primaries. The remaining phases are scheduled for October 2025 and January 2026.

Ken Agyapong outpaces rivals across key demographics

The survey reveals that Agyapong enjoys strong backing across several critical voter groups within the party. He is especially popular among women (57.8%), youth under 40 years (63%), students (58.9%), the unemployed (52.8%), and self-employed individuals, including traders, artisans, farmers, and market women (55.5%).

Regionally, Agyapong leads in 10 of the 16 regions, with overwhelming support in the Central Region (68.1%), Western Region (59.5%), and Eastern Region (60.8%).

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia maintains a narrow lead among male delegates (48.9%), older members of the party (aged 40 and above), and those in full-time employment (53.8%). He is also the preferred choice among Muslim delegates, commanding 52.8% of their support.

Religion and age key determinants of delegate preferences

Religion was cited as a major influencing factor in delegate choices. While Dr Bawumia remains dominant among Muslim delegates, Ken Agyapong is the overwhelming favourite among Christian delegates, with 61.6% support. Interestingly, he also leads among delegates who identify as atheists or traditionalists, with 55.1%.

The findings also pointed to a generational divide in candidate preference. Dr Bawumia attracts more support from older delegates, while Agyapong dominates among younger members and those outside the formal employment sector.

Tight races in swing regions

Dr Bawumia holds a lead in six regions, including the Northern (50.8%), North East (51.6%), and Upper West (61.5%) regions. However, the report suggests that Agyapong’s broader appeal and grassroots traction give him a significant advantage at this stage of the race.

In regions such as Savannah and Upper East, the contest remains extremely close, with no clear frontrunner.

Survey cautions on shifting dynamics

Sanity Africa emphasised that while these initial findings offer a critical snapshot of current trends, delegate sentiments may evolve as the campaigns progress and the party updates its voter album.

“The report offers a crucial starting point for tracking movements and understanding what drives delegate behaviour,” the group noted.

It added that future survey phases would incorporate additional delegate groups, including former appointees and ex-party executives, whose inclusion could significantly alter the race’s trajectory.

Let’s Support 24-Hour Economy – Henry Osei Akoto

0

Henry Osei Akoto

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Osei Akoto, says the launch of the 24-Hour Economy policy by the government will open up Ghana’s economy for accelerated growth.

Describing the initiative as bipartisan, he said it represents the surest way for Ghana to compete globally in terms of economic expansion and productivity.

Speaking in an interview following the official launch of the policy in Accra, Mr. Osei Akoto argued that Ghana loses significant revenue during hours of inactivity, compared to the value generated during productive hours.

“The 24-Hour Economy has been our mantra and policy for years, and every Ghanaian knows it. What we are telling Ghanaians is that the only way to expand the economy and create opportunities is to move beyond the current 8-hour work system. We must shift to a 24-hour work model.

“The country shouldn’t sleep. The hours we spend sleeping are lost revenue. If we want to be part of the 21st-century global economy, then we must stay productive round the clock,” he said.

Calling for broad support for the policy, Mr. Osei Akoto stressed that it would generate opportunities, especially for the youth, while enhancing economic output.

He also highlighted that the initiative aligns Ghana with several developed and developing countries that have embraced 24-hour productivity models to grow their economies.

“It’s a good initiative. It’s happening across the world. You don’t go to Europe and find everything shut down after 10 p.m. No. Not just Europe — even in some African countries. Go to North Africa, go to Egypt, Morocco, and other places, and see how their economies operate. We must embrace this because it will create opportunities and attract more investment and prosperity into the country,” he added.

The 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme, also known as “24H+,” is a flagship initiative of the Mahama-led administration. It seeks to transform Ghana’s productivity framework by extending economic activity beyond traditional working hours and integrating key sectors into a seamless, efficient value chain.

The programme is projected to cost $4 billion, with the government committing between $300 million and $400 million as seed capital to cover viability gaps and attract private sector investment.

Janet Nabla threatens to sue gov’t over National Cultural Convention Centre project

0

The Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has threatened to sue the Mahama-led government over plans to convert the stalled National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre (NCCC).

According to Madam Nabla, she and many others donated towards the construction of a National Cathedral—not a Cultural Convention Centre—and the government’s move amounts to a betrayal of public trust.

The decision to reconfigure the project was outlined in a new policy document under the 24-hour economy initiative for culture, creative arts, and tourism, dubbed .

The proposed NCCC is expected to be established in partnership with the AfCFTA Secretariat and serve as Africa’s premier venue for international exhibitions, film festivals, trade shows, and summits.

The government argues that the shift addresses a critical infrastructure gap while respecting religious and national values.

However, speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Nabla strongly criticised the move and insisted that the original purpose—a National Cathedral—remains valid.

While it remains unclear whether she is a member of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, she vowed to ensure the church is reimbursed for its financial contributions.

she said.

She further urged the government to consider launching a new national fundraising campaign if it wants to pursue the NCCC initiative.

End WAEC result charges now – CUTS Int’l to Education Ministry

0

CUTS International, Accra, a leading public policy and consumer advocacy think tank, has called on the Ministry of Education to intervene and compel the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to stop charging candidates fees to access their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results online.

In a statement released in Accra on Monday, July 7, the West Africa Regional Director of CUTS, Mr. Appiah Kusi Adomako, described the current system as exploitative and unjustified.

According to him, WAEC’s practice of requiring students to purchase scratch cards to view their results is not only unnecessary but borders on extortion.

“In many parts of the world, exam bodies do not charge students to access their results. In our local universities, student can access their results free of charge, as is the case in every jurisdiction. This is a basic right that should not come at a cost to students or their families,” Mr. Adomako said.

He noted that before 2004, WAEC printed and distributed physical results slips to schools, which came with significant logistical costs.

However, since transitioning to an online system, those costs have drastically reduced. Despite this shift, candidates are now being asked to pay between GHS 15 and GHS 25 just to view their results.

This year, for example, about 600,000 candidates wrote the BECE, and each candidate is paying GHS15, which translates to a total of GHC 9 million.

“Going digital was supposed to make things easier and more affordable. But instead, candidates are now forced to pay out of pocket for a service that should be free. In countries like South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, and Zambia, students access their results online without paying any fee. Why should Ghana be different?” he added.

Computerised School Placement Also Affected

The statement also raised concerns about the cost burden placed on students accessing their Senior High School placement through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

“The placement system was introduced to improve transparency and reduce costs compared to the old manual process. Yet today, students still have to pay just to find out which school they have been placed in. This defeats the very purpose of automation,” Mr. Adomako explained.

Calls for Policy Action

CUTS is calling on the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to act swiftly and decisively to end what it describes as an illegal and unfair practice starting this year.

“WAEC is not the only body that runs examinations. Students who sit for ACCA, SAT, TOEFL, GRE, IELTS, and even our own national service postings access their results or placements online for free. The same should apply here,” Mr. Adomako stressed.

He concluded by urging authorities to ensure that education remains accessible and affordable. The fact that this practice has persisted for 21 years does not justify its legitimacy.

“Accessing exam results or computerised placement into SHS should not be a luxury or a source of revenue. It should be a basic service as it pertains in other jurisdictions.”

Legon students demand a ban on NPP Conference amid COVID-19 resurgence

0

A group of level 400 students at the University of Ghana is preparing to petition the University’s Sports Directorate to block the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from holding its National Annual Delegates Conference at the UG Sports Stadium from July 17 to 19, 2025.

The students have raised concerns about a possible escalation of COVID-19 cases, warning that allowing thousands of delegates from across the country to gather could worsen the outbreak and potentially spread the virus beyond the university community.

They argue the event would violate preventive protocols issued by the University Health Directorate.

On June 23, the University of Ghana Health Services Directorate announced a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus and in surrounding areas, urging students, staff, and visitors to remain vigilant.

Two days later, the Dean of Students suspended all social gatherings, affecting events organised by student bodies, including the SRC and GRASAG.

The SRC, in a June 28 notice, also appealed to students to comply with preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.

In Parliament on July 1, the Minister of Health confirmed 107 positive cases out of 316 suspected infections within the university community but assured that the outbreak had not yet spread beyond campus.

The concerned students say hosting the NPP’s large gathering in the current climate risks turning the stadium into a hotspot for transmission.

They are calling on the Sports Directorate, university management, and government to engage the NPP leadership and halt the conference to prevent a potential nationwide lockdown.

‘I may end up in prison too’

Angel Asiamah poses with Agradaa before her imprisonment play videoAngel Asiamah poses with Agradaa before her imprisonment

In an emotionally charged sermon following his wife’s 15-year jail sentence, Angel Asiamah, husband and junior pastor to evangelist Patricia “Agradaa” Asiamah, has disclosed that he, too, might soon be behind bars.

Speaking during church service after Agradaa’s imprisonment on July 6, 2025, Asiamah described his wife’s ordeal as all part of God’s plan for the growth of the ministry, likening it to the tribulations of biblical figures like the apostles who were sent on missions away from comfort.

He later revealed that he may end up suffering the same fate as Agradaa in prison but affirmed it would be part of God’s plan.

“As I stand before you today, it is possible that something may come up and I may end up joining my wife in prison.

“It’s all part of God’s mission and I have come to accept that,” he said.

He later led the congregation in prayer, pledging unwavering solidarity with Agradaa and encouraging members to stay grounded in faith during this testing period.

Agradaa was convicted on July 3, 2025, by an Accra Circuit Court and sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour for defrauding by false pretences and charlatanic advertisement.

She was found guilty of luring followers on a televised broadcast with false claims of spiritual abilities to double money.

BREAKING: Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi is dead

0

Ernest Yaw Kumi has been reported dead Ernest Yaw Kumi has been reported dead

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been reported dead.

Details surrounding his death remain scanty, but a report by GHOne TV has confirmed the news.

Ernest Kumi is reported to have died at the age of 40. As of now, there is no confirmation regarding the cause of his sudden demise.

Kumi recently made headlines when he was cited for contempt by the Koforidua High Court on February 19, 2025, for defying an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a Member of Parliament on the Minority side of the House.

Consequently, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.

The presiding judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, ruled that the MP had consistently failed to appear in court throughout the contempt proceedings.

The judge also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus, which argued that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties and, therefore, could not attend court sessions. The judge rejected the letter, stating that accepting it would contradict his ruling.

However, on June 11, 2025, the Supreme Court, in a 4-1 majority decision, overturned the conviction after Kumi filed an application for the apex court to set aside the contempt ruling handed down by the Koforidua High Court.

The Supreme Court also granted a separate application to quash the interim injunction that had barred him from acting as the elected representative of the constituency.

Additionally, the court upheld his request to prohibit Justice Emmanuel Senyo from proceeding with sentencing.

Following media reports of his passing, condolence messages from the general public have begun pouring in to express sympathy and support for his family.

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Monday, July 7, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,542.47, down from GH¢9,552.30 on July 3, 2025.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,369.87, down from GH¢18,389.54.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢36,067.04, down from GH¢36,106.37.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and can be purchased through commercial banks.

Surge in gold prices to reshape Ghana’s economic outlook

0

UK-based research and risk analysis firm, Fitch Solutions, has projected that gold prices will remain relatively high compared to historical averages over the medium term.

According to Fitch, this development is expected to boost Ghana’s foreign reserves and economic influence.

In its latest Sub-Saharan Africa Monthly Outlook, Fitch noted that the sustained rise in gold prices will carry significant political and economic implications for countries across the region, particularly Ghana, where gold remains the top export commodity, accounting for about 40% of total exports.

“We think that high gold prices will have a broad range of political implications in Sub-Saharan Africa, given that most countries in the region export at least some gold,” the report stated.

Fitch also indicated that strong gold prices have contributed to increased foreign reserves, with the boost in gold export earnings expected to enable governments to make bold economic decisions.

The firm forecasts that Ghana’s current account surplus will widen from 4.2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024 to 5.8% in 2025, largely driven by robust gold prices and higher export receipts.

Ghana’s foreign reserves are projected to rise sharply from $6.4 billion in 2024 to $11.6 billion by the end of 2025, providing the country with a comfortable import cover of 4.8 months.

Murder inquiry after death of scientist on Dundee street

0

Dr Fortune Gomo completed her PhD at the University of Dundee in 2022 Dr Fortune Gomo completed her PhD at the University of Dundee in 2022

A man has been charged in connection with the death of a scientist who was found seriously injured on a Dundee street.

Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, who was originally from Zimbabwe, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on South Road at about 16:25 on Saturday.

The 20-year-old suspect is due to appear before Dundee Sheriff Court later.

Following a post-mortem examination, Police Scotland said the death was being treated as murder.

Dr Gomo, who worked for Scottish Water, lived locally and was a graduate of the University of Dundee.

Prof Nigel Seaton, interim principal and vice-chancellor, said the university was “shocked” by the death of the former research assistant.

Det Supt Peter Sharp, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: “Firstly, my thoughts remain with Fortune’s family at this incredibly sad time.

“They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected.”

He added inquiries were continuing and said the incident “poses no wider risk to the public”.

The senior officer said his team were following a number of lines of inquiry.

Det Supt Sharp added: “I am also acutely aware of content circulating on social media and would urge the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.

“The public will notice a visibly increased police presence in the area and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak with our officers.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the force.

Prof Seaton said Dr Gomo was a PhD student and then postdoctoral research assistant in geography at the University of Dundee until February 2022.

Dr Gomo had recently joined Scottish Water as a senior service planner in water resource planning and was “thriving in her career”.

Prof Seaton added: “Her death, following an alleged attack in South Road, Dundee, on Saturday afternoon, is a truly shocking event in our city and for our University community.

“It will be particularly distressing for those who knew and worked with Fortune throughout her time here at the University, and for all of those in our close-knit community of African colleagues and students.

“Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time.”

He said students affected by Dr Gomo’s death could find “support and solace” in the university’s Chaplaincy Centre, which will open on Monday.

Angela Machonesa, who wrote on Facebook that she had been at school and university with Dr Gomo in Zimbabwe, said her death had left her heartbroken.

She said: “Her brilliance in the classroom was only matched by her emotional intelligence. She was the kind of person you’d go to when you needed clarity, not just of mind, but of heart.

“We are heartbroken. We are angry. We are disoriented. But we are also united in one voice: Fortune Gomo mattered. Her life mattered. Her legacy must never be forgotten.”

Kwabena Kwabena Cautions Thomas Partey, Others Over Foreign Women

0

Kwabena Kwabena

Musician Kwabena Kwabena has issued a word of caution to African footballers playing abroad, advising them to be careful when entering relationships with foreign women, particularly White women.

Speaking on UTV’s United , the award-winning singer addressed the ongoing rape allegations involving Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, using the case as a point of reflection to offer guidance to African footballers overseas.

“I don’t want to sound racist, but I would advise these young African men going overseas to play football to be cautious in their relationships with White women,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena observed a pattern in which many African players, after achieving successful careers abroad, end up facing serious personal and legal challenges tied to romantic relationships. He cited issues such as divorces, property disputes, and child support battles as common outcomes.

“Most of these African footballers, after they’ve gone out there, eventually get involved with White ladies and end up in one issue or another… It doesn’t end well for them,” he added.

The singer further urged Ghanaians not to mock others in difficult situations but to learn from their experiences.

“When you see a man fall, don’t laugh – learn.  If not, you might also fall,” he cautioned.

Kwabena Kwabena acknowledged that such issues are often rooted in more complex personal dynamics, stating that Thomas Partey “might have had things going on with her in the past,” suggesting there could be deeper context behind the allegations.

His comments come as Partey faces intense scrutiny over serious legal charges. The former Arsenal midfielder has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women. The alleged incidents occurred between 2021 and 2022.

Partey has denied all the charges and is scheduled to appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
